CHAPTER 3 — THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

For ten seconds...
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The only sound inside Blackthorn Manor was the faint ticking of the antique clock hanging near the fireplace.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
Like it was counting down to something.
I stared at the empty screen.
The image was gone.
But the voice remained.
That voice.
A stranger's voice.
Yet somehow...
A part of me recognized it.
Not logically.
Not through memory.
Through something deeper.
A connection I couldn't explain.
"That was impossible."
My father's voice finally broke the silence.
I turned toward him.
"You knew he might still be alive."
It wasn't a question.
It was an accusation.
Alexander Vale looked away.
And that hurt more than anything.
Because my father had always been my safest place.
The one person I believed would never betray me.
But tonight...
I was discovering that the people who loved me had also been the people who hid the biggest truths.
"Answer me."
My father closed his eyes.
"Yes."
The word felt heavier than the entire mansion.
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
"For thirty years?"
His silence answered.
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I didn't know what else to do.
"Thirty years."
I shook my head.
"You watched me grow up knowing my biological father might still be alive?"
"Elizabeth—"
"No."
I stepped back.
"I want the truth."
My father looked at me.
The powerful businessman.
The man who controlled billions.
The man who terrified entire boardrooms.
Suddenly looked like an old father afraid of losing his daughter.
"I believed Adrian was dead."
"Then why did you say you never believed it?"
He hesitated.
"Because Adrian was my closest friend."
My expression changed.
"Your friend?"
He nodded.
"We built our companies together."
I froze.
"What?"
"Before Vale International existed, there was another organization."
He looked at the photograph.
"Cross-Vale."
The name sounded like something from another life.
"Your father and I created it."
"What kind of company was it?"
My father didn't answer immediately.
Because the truth was something he hated admitting.
"At first?"
"Security."
"Protection."
"Information."
A pause.
"Then it became something more."
I understood.
"Power."
He nodded.
"Yes."
I looked at the letter in my hand.
My father's words.
They are not hunting you because you are my weakness. They are hunting you because you are my greatest weapon.
"What does that mean?"
My father didn't answer.
"Tell me."
He walked toward the fireplace.
Behind an old painting was a hidden compartment.
A secret inside a secret.
He removed a small metal case.
"I was hoping you would never need this."
He placed it on the table.
Inside was a key.
Not an ordinary key.
A black metallic key with a symbol engraved on it.
A symbol I had never seen.
A circle.
Split down the middle.
"What is it?"
"Access."
"To what?"
My father looked at me.
"Your father's legacy."
Three hours later...
I sat inside my father's private aircraft.
Flying away from Blackthorn Manor.
The mansion where my marriage died.
The mansion where I discovered my entire life had been built on secrets.
Nathan Ashford was gone.
His company was collapsing.
The world would wake up tomorrow and see the headlines.
Billionaire CEO Accused of Financial Fraud and Domestic Abuse.
But strangely...
I felt nothing.
No satisfaction.
No victory.
Only emptiness.
Because destroying Nathan was supposed to be the end.
Instead...
It was the beginning.
Across from me, my father's security director, Marcus Reed, placed several documents on the table.
Marcus had worked with my father for twenty-five years.
He was the kind of man who noticed everything.
Every movement.
Every word.
Every lie.
"Ms. Cross."
I looked up.
He immediately corrected himself.
"Elizabeth."
I noticed.
"Why did you call me that?"
He looked uncomfortable.
"Because that is who you are."
The answer bothered me.
Because everyone suddenly knew me better than I knew myself.
Marcus opened the first file.
"Your biological father created something called The Phoenix Protocol."
I frowned.
"What is that?"
"No one knows exactly."
"Not even you?"
"No."
That surprised me.
"You worked with him."
Marcus nodded.
"But Adrian trusted very few people."
My father looked out the window.
"Not even me."
"Why?"
Neither man answered.
That was becoming a pattern.
I leaned forward.
"Everyone keeps saying my father was dangerous."
"Powerful."
"Impossible."
"But nobody tells me why."
Marcus exchanged a glance with Alexander.
Finally, my father spoke.
"Because Adrian discovered something."
"What?"
"A network."
"What kind of network?"
My father's expression darkened.
"A group of people who influence governments, corporations, and financial systems from the shadows."
I stared.
"You're talking about a conspiracy."
"Yes."
"And my father found it?"
"More than that."
My father looked at me.
"He found their identities."
The aircraft suddenly felt smaller.
"And they killed him for it."
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"They didn't kill him."
His voice lowered.
"They erased him."
When we landed, we weren't taken to a mansion.
Not a hotel.
Not a corporate headquarters.
Instead, we arrived at a hidden facility surrounded by mountains.
No signs.
No roads.
Nothing.
Only security.
"This is where my father kept his secrets?"
I asked.
My father nodded.
"The place where Adrian stored information he believed could destroy the world."
That sentence should have terrified me.
But strangely...
I felt something else.
A pull.
Like I had been here before.
Impossible.
I had never visited.
As we entered the facility, every light turned on automatically.
A scanner appeared.
Marcus stepped forward.
"Identity verification."
The machine scanned his hand.
Access denied.
He frowned.
Again.
Access denied.
My father tried.
Access denied.
The three of us stared.
Then the machine turned toward me.
I stepped closer.
"I don't think this will work."
The scanner activated.
A red light crossed my face.
Then suddenly...
The entire facility came alive.
Green lights.
Doors opening.
Systems activating.
A voice echoed through the room.
"Welcome back, Elizabeth Cross."
I froze.
My father froze.
Marcus stepped backward.
Because the facility had recognized me.
Not Alexander.
Not Marcus.
Me.
A second voice followed.
A recording.
A man's voice.
Adrian.
My biological father.
"If you are hearing this..."
A pause.
"Then they finally found you."
I swallowed.
"Elizabeth..."
The recording continued.
"I don't know how old you are now."
"I don't know what kind of person you became."
"But if Alexander is standing beside you..."
The recording paused.
Then came a sentence that made my father go completely still.
"Do not trust him completely."
My heart dropped.
I looked at Alexander.
The man who raised me.
The man who protected me.
The man who sacrificed everything for me.
The recording continued.
"Because Alexander Vale knows the truth about your mother."
Silence.
My father whispered:
"No..."
I turned.
"My mother?"
The recording played one final message.
"Elizabeth..."
"If you want to know why you were hidden..."
"If you want to know why they are afraid of you..."
"Find the room beneath the old Cross estate."
A pause.
"Your mother left something there."
The screen went black.
But the final words remained.
"And when you find it, you will learn the truth about why she died."
I couldn't breathe.
Because suddenly...
This was no longer about Nathan.
No longer about revenge.
No longer about my husband's betrayal.
This was about my entire existence.
May you like
And somewhere in the world...
Someone had spent thirty years making sure I never discovered who I really was.
