CHAPTER 12 — THE NIGHT MY MOTHER DIED

Nobody moved.
Not Adrian.
Not Alexander.
Not even Victoria.
The entire room seemed frozen around one sentence.
Your father killed her.
I looked at Adrian.
The man who had just returned from the dead.
The man who claimed he had spent thirty years protecting me.
The man whose eyes carried the pain of losing my mother.
And now...
The man standing accused of taking her life.
"No."
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Not because I defended him.
Because my mind refused to accept another impossible truth.
I was tired of impossible truths.
Tired of learning that every person I loved had another face hidden behind the one they showed me.
Adrian looked at me.
"Elizabeth."
His voice broke.
"I know what this looks like."
I laughed quietly.
"Do you?"
He stopped.
"Because from where I'm standing..."
I looked around the room.
"My whole life looks like a crime scene."
Silence.
The old man watched me carefully.
Not like an enemy.
Like someone waiting to see what I would become.
"Tell me."
I looked at Adrian.
"Tell me what happened."
Adrian didn't answer.
That hurt.
More than the accusation.
Because hesitation was always where the truth lived.
"Please."
My voice became softer.
Not because I trusted him.
Because I needed to know.
Finally...
Adrian sat down.
The strongest man in the room suddenly looked exhausted.
"Your mother was named Elena Cross."
I closed my eyes.
Hearing her name from him made everything more real.
"She was the smartest person I ever knew."
A faint smile appeared.
"She could see through people before they even understood themselves."
His expression changed.
"That's why they feared her."
"Who?"
"The Meridian Circle."
I shook my head.
"But you said they didn't kill her."
"They didn't."
A pause.
"Not directly."
I looked at him.
"Then what happened?"
Adrian took a breath.
"The night Elena died..."
THIRTY YEARS EARLIER
Rain covered the Cross estate.
Elena stood inside the hidden vault.
The same vault where I had discovered my mother's final messages.
But she was not alone.
Across from her stood Adrian.
Younger.
Angrier.
Desperate.
"You can't do this."
Elena looked at him.
"I have to."
"You don't understand what you're dealing with."
She smiled sadly.
"No, Adrian."
"I understand exactly."
She placed a file on the table.
Inside were names.
Hundreds of names.
Members of the Meridian Circle.
Powerful people.
Dangerous people.
"You found it."
Adrian whispered.
Elena nodded.
"And I found something worse."
"What?"
She looked at him.
"They weren't searching for the archive."
A pause.
"They were searching for Elizabeth."
Adrian froze.
"Our daughter?"
Elena nodded.
"They know what she is."
Adrian's face changed.
"She is a child."
"No."
Elena looked at him.
"To them, she is an opportunity."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Then we disappear."
Elena shook her head.
"Too late."
"What are you saying?"
She looked toward the door.
"They already know."
A sound.
Footsteps.
Someone entering.
Adrian immediately reached for his weapon.
But Elena stopped him.
"No."
"Who?"
She looked at him.
"Someone you trust."
The door opened.
And Alexander Vale entered.
PRESENT DAY
I looked at Alexander.
My heart tightened.
Again.
Always another secret.
Adrian continued.
"Alexander arrived that night."
My father said nothing.
"He wasn't alone."
I looked at him.
"Who was with him?"
Adrian's eyes became darker.
"The Meridian Circle."
The room exploded.
Victoria stepped forward.
"Impossible."
Adrian looked at her.
"You know it isn't."
Alexander finally spoke.
"Enough."
Everyone turned.
His voice was different.
Not the calm father.
The powerful businessman.
A man who had carried a burden too long.
"Let me explain."
I stared.
"Please."
The word sounded strange coming from him.
Because I had spent my entire life believing he never needed to explain anything.
Alexander looked at me.
"I made a mistake."
Adrian laughed bitterly.
"A mistake?"
Alexander ignored him.
"I believed I could control them."
I frowned.
"The Meridian Circle?"
He nodded.
"I thought I could enter their world, learn their secrets, and destroy them from inside."
"Like a spy."
"Yes."
I looked at Adrian.
"And you knew?"
Adrian looked away.
"Yes."
My anger returned.
"Everyone knew."
Nobody defended themselves.
Because they couldn't.
Alexander continued.
"That night, I went to Elena because I discovered the Circle knew about Elizabeth."
"What did they want?"
His voice became painful.
"They wanted custody."
I froze.
"Of me?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Nobody answered.
Then the old man spoke.
"Because your birth was not ordinary."
I turned.
"Not this again."
He stepped closer.
"Elizabeth, your mother discovered something about you before you were born."
"What?"
He looked at Adrian.
"Tell her."
Adrian closed his eyes.
Then said:
"Your mother discovered that your DNA carried a unique combination from both the Cross and Vale bloodlines."
I frowned.
"So?"
"Your family lines were connected for generations."
"Certain traits."
"Certain abilities."
I almost laughed.
"Abilities?"
Adrian shook his head.
"Not supernatural."
A pause.
"Human."
"What does that mean?"
Elena's father answered.
"Exceptional memory."
"Pattern recognition."
"Advanced emotional intelligence."
"The ability to analyze information faster than most people."
I stared.
"You're saying I'm smart?"
"No."
Adrian looked at me.
"We're saying your brain processes information differently."
Silence.
"And the Meridian Circle wanted to control that."
My stomach turned.
"They wanted to use me."
"Yes."
I looked at Adrian.
"Now answer the question."
He knew exactly what I meant.
"The night my mother died."
Everyone became silent.
Adrian looked down.
"I didn't kill Elena."
A pause.
"But I was responsible for what happened."
My heart sank.
"What does that mean?"
He swallowed.
"I trusted the wrong person."
"Who?"
His eyes moved toward Alexander.
The room froze.
Alexander closed his eyes.
"Adrian."
"No."
Adrian's voice became cold.
"She deserves the truth."
I looked at Alexander.
My father.
The man who raised me.
The man who protected me.
The man who was suddenly at the center of everything.
"What did you do?"
Alexander's eyes filled with regret.
"I tried to save her."
"Did you?"
Silence.
Then:
"No."
The answer broke something inside me.
"What happened?"
Alexander whispered:
"Elena discovered the Meridian Circle had a leader."
"She discovered his identity."
"She was going to expose him."
A pause.
"So I tried to stop her from going public."
I stared.
"You stopped her?"
"I tried to buy time."
"By doing what?"
His voice became barely audible.
"I locked the vault."
My blood ran cold.
"The vault?"
"The room where she was hiding."
I looked around.
The same room.
"She was trapped?"
Alexander nodded.
"I thought I could return before anything happened."
A tear appeared in his eyes.
"But the Circle found her first."
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Adrian looked at Alexander.
"You left her there."
Alexander whispered:
"Yes."
The truth was finally coming out.
Not one villain.
Not one hero.
Just people.
Broken.
Afraid.
Making choices that destroyed everything.
I looked at Adrian.
"So my father didn't kill my mother."
"No."
I looked at Alexander.
"But he didn't save her."
"No."
The old man watched me.
Then said:
"Now you understand."
I turned toward him.
"Understand what?"
His expression became serious.
"Why your mother left you one final warning."
A pause.
"Trust no one completely."
The lights suddenly went dark.
Again.
But this time...
Nobody was attacking.
A single message appeared on the wall.
Not from the Meridian Circle.
Not from Charles.
From Elena.
My mother.
"IF YOU ARE SEEING THIS, THEN THE FINAL BETRAYAL HAS ALREADY HAPPENED."
Everyone froze.
A second message appeared.
"THE PERSON YOU TRUST MOST IS STILL LYING."
I slowly turned.
Toward the only people left.
My father.
My biological father.
My grandfather.
And my aunt.
May you like
Because one of them...
Was still hiding the final truth.
