CHAPTER 15 — THE FAMILY SECRET THAT STARTED EVERYTHING

The words remained on the wall.
THE FIRST VICTIM WAS NOT ELENA CROSS.
A pause.
Then:
IT WAS YOUR GRANDMOTHER.
Nobody spoke.
Because every person in that room understood what that meant.
The story we had been chasing...
The murder.
The betrayal.
The war between families.
It did not begin with my mother.
It began before her.
A generation earlier.
I looked at my grandfather.
The man who had spent thirty years hiding from the world.
The man who claimed he was protecting the family.
The man who had built an empire of secrets.
For the first time...
He looked old.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just old.
"Who was she?"
My voice broke the silence.
My grandfather didn't answer.
"Who was my grandmother?"
Still nothing.
I stepped closer.
"Everyone has told me about the people who died."
"My mother."
"My father."
"Everyone."
I stared at him.
"But nobody ever talks about the first person who started this."
His eyes lowered.
Finally...
He spoke.
"Her name was Isabella Cross."
The name appeared to hurt him.
"She was the smartest person I ever knew."
A bitter smile appeared.
"And the only person who ever truly understood me."
I looked at him.
"Then why did she die?"
Silence.
Then:
"Because she discovered what I was becoming."
THIRTY-FIVE YEARS EARLIER
The Cross estate was different back then.
Full of life.
Full of voices.
Full of people who believed they could control the future.
Isabella Cross stood inside the family library.
Documents covered the table.
Financial records.
Research files.
Private reports.
She looked at her husband.
"You created something dangerous."
Her husband didn't look away.
The young man standing across from her was not yet the legend the world feared.
He was simply a brilliant man with a dangerous idea.
"The world is changing."
Isabella shook her head.
"That is not an excuse."
"I am trying to protect our family."
"No."
She placed the papers down.
"You are trying to control everything."
A silence.
"You created the Meridian Circle."
He didn't deny it.
"Only to maintain balance."
Isabella laughed sadly.
"That's what every powerful person says before they become a monster."
He looked hurt.
Because she was the only person whose opinion mattered.
"You don't understand."
"No."
She looked at him.
"I understand perfectly."
She pointed at the files.
"You are not protecting the family."
"You are building a cage."
PRESENT DAY
My grandfather looked away.
"Isabella discovered everything."
"What everything?"
"The Meridian Circle."
"The Genesis Archive."
"The Ascension Protocol."
I frowned.
"So she tried to stop you."
He nodded.
"Yes."
"And you killed her."
The silence was painful.
Finally:
"Yes."
Everyone froze.
Even Adrian.
My grandfather didn't defend himself.
Didn't make excuses.
"I did."
My chest tightened.
"Why?"
His answer was quiet.
"Because I was afraid."
The honesty surprised me.
"I spent my entire life building power."
"Money."
"Influence."
"Control."
A pause.
"And then the person I loved most looked at me and said I had become the thing I hated."
He closed his eyes.
"I couldn't accept it."
I stared.
"You killed your wife because she was right."
His eyes opened.
"Yes."
Nobody noticed Nathan leaving.
Not until Marcus saw the movement.
"Wait."
Everyone turned.
Nathan stood near the exit.
Holding a small device.
My heart sank.
Of course.
Of course there was another betrayal.
"Stop."
Nathan looked at me.
His face was filled with shame.
"I didn't want it to happen this way."
I stared.
"What did you do?"
He looked at Charles.
Then back at me.
"I contacted them."
Adrian immediately moved.
"Who?"
Nathan whispered:
"The Meridian Council."
The room changed.
Victoria looked shocked.
Charles looked furious.
"You're an idiot."
Nathan ignored him.
"I thought they could help me."
I laughed softly.
"Help you?"
His face broke.
"I thought if I gave them information..."
A pause.
"They would leave me alone."
I stared at him.
"You still don't understand."
"What?"
"You were never important enough for them to fear."
The words hurt him.
But they were true.
Nathan had spent his entire life chasing power.
And he had never realized he was only a pawn.
Suddenly...
The device in Nathan's hand activated.
A voice came through.
Not Charles.
Not my grandfather.
A new voice.
Calm.
Female.
Everyone froze.
"Hello, Elizabeth."
My blood ran cold.
I knew that voice.
Not from memory.
From the recordings.
My mother's voice.
Impossible.
Adrian stepped forward.
"No."
The voice continued.
"I know you think I am dead."
A pause.
"But I left one final message."
My eyes widened.
"Mom?"
Everyone stared at the device.
The voice continued:
"If you are hearing this..."
"Then the family has already started fighting again."
A painful silence.
"I need you to understand something."
"The enemy was never one person."
"The enemy was never one family."
A pause.
"The enemy was the belief that love gives people the right to control others."
My eyes filled.
Because those were exactly the words I needed to hear.
The message continued.
"Elizabeth."
"Your grandfather will tell you he regrets what he did."
"Your father will tell you he protected you."
"Alexander will tell you he sacrificed everything."
"They are all telling the truth."
"But they are all missing something."
The room became silent.
"What?"
My mother's voice softened.
"The person who truly betrayed me..."
A pause.
"Was the person I trusted most."
Everyone looked around.
The recording continued.
"The person who knew everything."
"The person who knew where I was."
"The person who had the power to stop it."
My heart stopped.
Because I knew.
I knew before she said it.
My mother's final words came:
"Elizabeth..."
"Ask Adrian Cross why he was the last person to see me alive."
The device shut off.
Silence.
Everyone looked at Adrian.
Not Alexander.
Not my grandfather.
Adrian.
My father.
The man who had spent thirty years saying he loved my mother.
His face was completely broken.
"Adrian."
My voice was barely a whisper.
"What happened that night?"
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Tell me."
Still nothing.
Then...
Adrian whispered:
"Your mother asked me to kill her."
The entire room froze.
"What?"
He looked at me.
Tears in his eyes.
"Because she knew what was coming."
A pause.
"And she knew I was the only person who could do it."
I stared.
"I don't understand."
Adrian looked toward the darkness outside.
"Because your mother wasn't killed by someone else."
A long silence.
"She chose her own death."
Nobody moved.
Then Adrian said the words that shattered everything:
"Elena Cross was never the victim."
May you like
A pause.
"She was the person who started the final plan."
