CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET MY FATHER HID FOR THIRTY YEARS

The room had never felt so silent.

Not even after Nathan's crimes were exposed.

Not even after the evidence of his betrayal filled the walls of Blackthorn Manor.

Because those things made sense.

Nathan was a monster.

Celeste was a predator.

Their lies had finally been uncovered.

But the photograph in my hands...

That was different.

That was something else.

Something impossible.

I stared at the image again.

A younger version of myself stood between two adults.

My mother.

And a man I had never seen before.

The man was smiling.

His hand rested protectively on my shoulder.

Like someone who knew me.

Like someone who loved me.

But according to everything I had ever been told...

He didn't exist.

"Dad."

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

"Who is he?"

Alexander Vale didn't answer.

That frightened me more than anything else.

My father had faced corporate wars.

Political attacks.

Billion-dollar lawsuits.

He had stared down enemies who wanted him destroyed.

And he had never looked uncertain.

Until now.

Nathan noticed it too.

Even he understood something had changed.

The attention was no longer on him.

For once in his life...

The world was not revolving around Nathan Ashford.

He stepped forward.

"Elizabeth..."

I turned sharply.

"Don't."

He stopped.

The man who had ordered two hundred strikes against me was suddenly standing there like a frightened husband.

Like he had the right to comfort me.

"You don't get to say my name like that anymore."

His face tightened.

"I know I hurt you."

I looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"You know you got caught."

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because they were true.

Nathan never regretted what he did.

He regretted losing control.

Losing power.

Losing the ability to hide.

My father turned away from the screen.

"Everyone leaves."

Nathan immediately reacted.

"What?"

My father looked at him.

"You heard me."

Nathan laughed bitterly.

"You think you can just walk into my house—"

My father's security team moved.

Nathan stopped talking.

Because he finally remembered.

This was no longer his house.

Not anymore.

One by one, the guards escorted everyone out.

Celeste was the last to leave.

She passed beside me.

For the first time since I met her...

She looked small.

But her eyes still held something dangerous.

Hatred.

Pure hatred.

"You think you won."

I looked at her.

She smiled faintly.

"You have no idea what you just started."

Before I could respond, the guards took her away.

The doors closed.

Leaving only me.

My father.

And a thirty-year-old secret.

"Tell me the truth."

I placed the photograph on the table.

"No more protecting me."

My father's expression softened.

"Elizabeth—"

"No."

My voice cracked.

Not from fear.

From exhaustion.

"For years, everyone has decided what I can handle."

I looked at him.

"Nathan lied because he thought I was weak."

"My enemies lied because they thought I was powerless."

"But you..."

I swallowed.

"You lied because you thought I couldn't survive the truth."

My father looked away.

That was answer enough.

"You were right about one thing."

I continued.

"I was naive."

His eyes returned to mine.

"But I am not anymore."

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then my father slowly sat down.

A man who seemed impossible to break suddenly looked older.

"I should have told you years ago."

"About him?"

He nodded.

"About your real father."

My heart stopped.

The words felt unreal.

"My real father?"

My father's eyes closed.

"Yes."

The world seemed to tilt.

"No."

I shook my head.

"You're my father."

"I am."

His voice became painful.

"But not by blood."

I couldn't move.

Every memory.

Every birthday.

Every childhood moment.

Every time he held my hand.

All of it suddenly felt like a puzzle missing pieces.

"Who am I?"

My father looked at me.

"You are still my daughter."

"But who am I?"

He took a slow breath.

"Your biological father was a man named Adrian Cross."

The name meant nothing.

But my father's reaction told me everything.

"Who was he?"

My father walked toward the window.

Outside, the helicopter lights reflected across the dark gardens.

"Adrian was not an ordinary man."

"Neither are you."

He didn't answer.

Instead, he said:

"He built one of the most powerful intelligence networks in the world."

I frowned.

"Intelligence?"

"Private intelligence."

My father's voice lowered.

"Corporate espionage. Security operations. Information warfare."

I stared.

"You're saying my biological father was a spy?"

"No."

A pause.

"He was something much more dangerous."

My father looked at me.

"He was the man governments called when they needed impossible things done."

I felt cold.

"Then why don't I know him?"

My father didn't answer immediately.

Because the answer hurt.

"Because he was murdered."

Silence.

"When?"

"Thirty years ago."

I looked down at the photograph.

"But this picture..."

"Was taken two weeks before he disappeared."

My fingers tightened around the edge.

"Disappeared?"

My father nodded.

"Everyone believed he died."

"But?"

My father looked at me.

"But I never believed that."

A chill moved through me.

"Why?"

"Because Adrian Cross was not someone people killed easily."

My father stepped closer.

"And because before he vanished..."

He pointed at the photograph.

"He gave me you."

I froze.

"What?"

"He was being hunted."

"By who?"

My father looked toward the locked doors.

As if he was afraid someone could still hear.

"The same people who are trying to find you now."

A horrible feeling settled inside me.

"Nathan?"

"No."

My father's voice became serious.

"Nathan was only a distraction."

The room went cold.

"What do you mean?"

My father picked up the tablet again.

The message on the screen remained.

IF ALEXANDER VALE FINDS THIS, THE TRUTH ABOUT ELIZABETH'S BIRTH WILL COME OUT.

My father looked at the words.

"They knew about Adrian."

"They knew about you."

"And they waited."

"Why?"

His answer came slowly.

"Because they were waiting until you became valuable enough."

My stomach turned.

"Valuable?"

My father nodded.

"Elizabeth..."

He reached into an old locked drawer.

Inside was a small black envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not my married name.

Not Elizabeth Ashford.

My original name.

A name I had never seen before.

Elizabeth Cross.

My hands trembled.

"What is this?"

My father looked at me.

"Your inheritance."

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Only one sentence.

But it changed everything.

"To my daughter Elizabeth Cross. When the world finally comes for you, remember this: they are not hunting you because you are my weakness. They are hunting you because you are my greatest weapon."

I stopped breathing.

My father watched my reaction carefully.

"Now you understand."

"No."

I looked up.

"I don't."

My voice became stronger.

"I understand that everyone has been deciding my life for me."

I held the letter.

"My husband."

"My father."

"My enemies."

I stood.

"But nobody gets to do that anymore."

My father looked at me.

And for the first time...

I saw something I had never seen before.

Pride.

"You sound like him."

"Like who?"

He smiled sadly.

"Adrian."

Before I could ask more...

Every light in Blackthorn Manor suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Then all the security screens turned on.

Not with my father's files.

Not with Nathan's evidence.

With a live video feed.

A man appeared.

Older.

Scarred.

Sitting in a dark room.

Looking directly into the camera.

Looking directly at me.

My father stepped back.

Impossible.

"Adrian..."

I froze.

Because the dead man was looking at me.

And then he spoke.

"Elizabeth."

My blood ran cold.

"I know you finally found out the truth."

A pause.

"And I know Alexander told you I was dead."

The man smiled faintly.

"But your father lied."

I looked at Alexander.

He looked completely shocked.

The man on the screen leaned closer.

"I wasn't murdered."

A whisper.

"I was imprisoned."

The screen flickered.

Then his final words appeared:

"And Elizabeth... I have been waiting thirty years to meet my daughter."

The feed disappeared.

Leaving one terrifying truth behind.

My father wasn't the only person who had been protecting me.

Someone else had been watching.

Waiting.

May you like

Preparing.

For the moment I would finally become ready.
