CHAPTER 5 — THE ENEMY WHO KNEW MY NAME

The alarms continued screaming.
Red lights flashed across the underground vault, painting every photograph on the walls with a dark crimson glow.
My mother's face was still frozen on the blank screen.
Her final words echoed in my mind.
Your mother was murdered.
By someone inside our family.
I had spent my entire life believing my biggest tragedy was losing her.
Now I was discovering that my grief had been built on a lie.
And before I could even process the truth...
The people responsible had arrived.
Marcus Reed moved instantly.
The calm security director I had known for years disappeared.
In his place was a soldier.
Focused.
Controlled.
Dangerous.
"How many?"
My father looked at the monitor.
Marcus checked the numbers.
"At least forty outside the perimeter."
"Who?"
Marcus hesitated.
That scared me.
Because Marcus was not a man who hesitated.
Finally, he answered.
"The Meridian Circle."
The name felt heavier this time.
Not like a conspiracy.
Like a threat.
My father looked at me.
"Elizabeth, you need to leave."
I almost laughed.
"Leave?"
He nodded.
"There's an emergency tunnel beneath this room."
"No."
His expression hardened.
"This is not a discussion."
I stepped closer.
"For thirty years, everyone has been telling me where to go."
His eyes softened.
"Elizabeth—"
"My husband controlled me."
"My enemies controlled me."
"And even you..."
I looked at him.
"You controlled what truth I was allowed to know."
Silence.
I picked up the silver bird necklace from the glass case.
"So no."
I closed my hand around it.
"I'm not running anymore."
My father stared at me.
And then something unexpected happened.
He smiled.
Not happily.
Proudly.
Because in that moment...
He saw Adrian Cross's daughter.
Not the girl he protected.
The woman she had become.
The first explosion happened three minutes later.
The entire estate shook.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Marcus checked the security feed.
"They're inside the outer gate."
My father looked at him.
"How?"
Marcus's expression darkened.
"Someone gave them access."
Everyone became silent.
Someone inside.
A traitor.
My father's face changed.
"No."
I noticed.
"You know who it is."
He didn't answer.
"Who?"
Before he could speak...
The lights went out.
Not the alarms.
Everything.
Complete darkness.
Then a voice came through the speakers.
A woman's voice.
Calm.
Elegant.
Familiar.
"Alexander."
My father froze.
I looked at him.
"You know her?"
He didn't answer.
The voice continued.
"You always were stubborn."
A pause.
"But I knew eventually you would bring her here."
My stomach tightened.
"Her?"
The woman laughed softly.
"Elizabeth."
Hearing my name from a stranger sent a chill through me.
The speaker crackled.
"I have waited thirty years to see you."
Marcus immediately moved toward the control panel.
"Can you trace it?"
"No."
He looked frustrated.
"She's bypassing everything."
My father stepped closer to the speaker.
"Show yourself."
The woman laughed again.
"Still giving orders."
A pause.
"Still pretending you are the hero."
My father's face turned pale.
"You died."
The room became silent.
The woman answered:
"So did Adrian."
I felt cold.
My father whispered:
"Victoria."
The name hit the room.
Marcus looked shocked.
"Victoria Cross?"
I turned.
"Who is that?"
Nobody answered.
And that was becoming unbearable.
"Who is Victoria?"
My father looked at me.
"Your aunt."
I froze.
"My aunt?"
"Adrian's sister."
The speaker activated again.
"Alexander told you so little."
The woman's voice became colder.
"He always did think he could protect everyone."
I stepped toward the speaker.
"Why are you here?"
A pause.
Then:
"Because I want what belongs to me."
"What?"
A soft laugh.
"What your father stole."
My eyes narrowed.
"My father stole nothing."
The woman replied immediately.
"You don't even know what you are."
The words bothered me.
Because they sounded exactly like my father.
Like Adrian.
Like everyone who knew the truth except me.
"Stop speaking in riddles."
I said.
"Tell me what this is about."
The woman became silent.
Then:
"Your bloodline."
My hand tightened around the necklace.
"What about it?"
"Your father believed power came from money."
A pause.
"He was wrong."
The screen suddenly turned on.
A video appeared.
A young Adrian Cross.
My father beside him.
And another person.
A woman.
Victoria.
They were standing in the same vault.
The same room.
Years ago.
My heart raced.
The video showed them arguing.
Victoria was furious.
"You don't understand what she is!"
Adrian replied:
"She is my daughter."
Victoria slammed her hand against the table.
"She is the key!"
The video stopped.
I stared.
The key.
The same word.
Again.
My father looked away.
I turned toward him.
"What did she mean?"
No answer.
"Alexander."
His silence was enough.
"Tell me."
He finally spoke.
"When you were born..."
He stopped.
Like the words physically hurt.
"You were part of a project."
My stomach dropped.
"A project?"
My father looked at the floor.
"Adrian discovered that the Meridian Circle had been studying something for decades."
"What?"
"The transfer of power."
I frowned.
"That makes no sense."
"It does."
He looked at me.
"Your father believed information was the most powerful weapon in the world."
A pause.
"But he discovered something more dangerous."
"What?"
"People."
I didn't understand.
"People?"
"Certain families."
"Certain bloodlines."
"People who had been influencing history for generations."
I shook my head.
"This sounds insane."
My father nodded.
"It does."
"Until you see the evidence."
The speaker came alive again.
Victoria's voice interrupted.
"Bring Elizabeth to me."
Marcus immediately raised his weapon.
"No."
Victoria laughed.
"You still think you can stop this?"
A pause.
"You couldn't protect Adrian."
"You couldn't protect her mother."
"And you certainly couldn't protect Elizabeth."
My father went completely still.
Because that sentence hurt him.
Not because it was a threat.
Because it was true.
The doors above us suddenly opened.
Footsteps echoed.
Multiple people.
Armed.
Approaching.
Marcus checked his weapon.
"They're here."
My father looked at me.
"Stay behind me."
I almost smiled.
Even after everything...
He was still my father.
Still trying to protect me.
But I stepped beside him.
"No."
He looked at me.
"I'm done standing behind people."
The first enemy entered the vault.
Then another.
Then another.
But the person walking behind them...
Was not a soldier.
It was a woman.
Older.
Elegant.
Silver hair.
Cold eyes.
I knew instantly.
Victoria Cross.
My biological aunt.
The woman who knew my entire life before I did.
She looked at me.
And smiled.
Not with hatred.
Not with anger.
With recognition.
"Elizabeth."
Her voice was almost gentle.
"You look exactly like your mother."
I said nothing.
She looked at Alexander.
"You failed to hide her."
My father stepped forward.
"Victoria."
She smiled.
"Hello, brother."
Brother.
The word shocked me.
Because nobody had ever told me...
My father wasn't the only person in this family hiding secrets.
Victoria looked back at me.
Then said the one sentence that changed everything:
"Your mother didn't die because of the Meridian Circle."
May you like
A pause.
"She died because she discovered what you really are."
