Chapter 9 - THE ATTACK

The attack happened before dawn.

Security alarms screamed through the estate.

Windows shattered.

Men moved across the grounds.

My father pushed me behind a reinforced wall.

"Stay here."

"No."

"This isn't negotiable."

"Dad—"

He grabbed my shoulders.

"You survived Nathan."

His eyes hardened.

"You're not dying because of Victor."

Gunfire cracked outside.

I dropped to the floor.

For several minutes, everything became noise.

Then silence.

My father returned.

Blood covered his sleeve.

I froze.

"You're hurt."

"Not mine."

Behind him stood two security officers.

One was carrying a captured attacker.

The man's face was bruised.

He looked at me.

Then laughed.

"You have no idea what you've started."

I stepped forward.

"Who sent you?"

He smiled.

"Victor says hello."

Then he bit down.

My father shouted.

Too late.

The man collapsed.

I stared at the body.

The war had changed.

This was no longer about money.

It was about survival.

My father looked at me.

"We leave tonight."

"Where?"

"Somewhere Victor can't find."

I shook my head.

"No."

He stared.

"I have spent four years being moved around by powerful men."

I pointed toward the dead attacker.

"I'm done."

My voice was steady.

"We go after Victor."

My father studied me.

Then he nodded.

May you like

"All right."
