Chapter 7 - THE NAME IN THE FILE

The name was Victor Hale.
I had never heard it.
Nathan had.
So had Celeste.
Victor Hale was not publicly connected to Ashford Global.
He owned no visible shares.
Held no board position.
Had no executive title.
Yet investigators found his fingerprints everywhere.
Every offshore transfer.
Every shell company.
Every illegal acquisition.
Every political payment.
Victor had designed the architecture.
Nathan had been the public face.
Celeste had been the recruiter.
And I had been the financial key.
The original shares in my name gave Victor access to markets he couldn't legally enter.
My father studied the documents.
"This goes deeper than Ashford."
"How deep?"
"International."
"How many companies?"
"We don't know."
He looked at me.
"That's the problem."
That night, I couldn't sleep.
At 2:14 a.m., my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a man's voice whispered:
"You should have stayed on your knees."
The line went dead.
I stared at the phone.
My father appeared in the doorway seconds later.
He had heard the call.
"Was that him?"
"I don't know."
He immediately ordered the security team to lock down the property.
I looked at him.
"Dad."
"Yes?"
"I don't want to hide."
He shook his head.
"You're not hiding."
"I want to finish this."
His eyes hardened.
"Then we finish it together."
For the first time, I understood.
Nathan had been the beginning.
May you like
Not the end.
