Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SHARES

The documents arrived two days later.
My name appeared everywhere.
Trust agreements.
Acquisition records.
Original investment certificates.
Private voting rights.
I read them twice.
Then a third time.
Nathan had spent years telling people Ashford Global was his creation.
It wasn't.
My father had quietly transferred a substantial investment into my name before my marriage.
He had expected me to use it someday.
Nathan discovered the existence of the money shortly after our wedding.
I hadn't known.
He had.
That was why he married me.
The realization made me physically sick.
My entire marriage suddenly looked different.
The flowers.
The expensive dinners.
The business trips.
The endless compliments.
The promises.
None of them had been accidental.
Nathan hadn't fallen in love with me.
He had calculated me.
My father entered the room while I was staring at the documents.
"I should have told you."
I looked up.
"You knew?"
"I knew Nathan had discovered your shares."
"When?"
"Two months after your wedding."
My chest tightened.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I wanted to see what he would do."
I stood.
"You let me stay married to him."
"I monitored him."
"You let him hurt me."
My father lowered his eyes.
"I underestimated how far he would go."
The anger came suddenly.
"You told me to stay quiet."
"I told you to observe."
"You told me to wait."
"Because I believed the evidence would protect you."
I laughed bitterly.
"And what if I had died before you had enough evidence?"
My father didn't answer.
That silence told me everything.
He had been protecting me.
But protection had become another kind of cage.
"I don't want you making decisions for me anymore."
He looked at me.
"What do you want?"
I placed my hand on the documents.
"I want my company."
My father smiled.
Not proudly.
Relieved.
May you like
"Then take it."
