Chapter 15 - THE ARCHIVE

The original Vale archive was beneath an old financial institution in Manhattan.
It contained thirty years of intelligence.
My mother entered the vault first.
My father followed.
Then me.
The walls were covered with physical records.
Photographs.
Maps.
Documents.
Names.
Entire histories.
My mother touched one file.
"Victor began here."
She opened it.
His first company.
His first illegal transaction.
His first murder.
Everything.
"He has been building this for thirty years."
My father looked at me.
"That's why he wanted the archive."
I understood.
"Because it can destroy him."
My mother shook her head.
"Not just him."
She pointed toward the files.
"People in governments."
"Bankers."
"Judges."
"Executives."
"People who believe they're untouchable."
I looked at the archive.
"What happens if we release it?"
"Chaos."
"And if we don't?"
My father answered.
"Victor wins."
I closed my eyes.
Then I remembered Nathan.
Two hundred strikes.
His laughter.
Celeste counting.
The helplessness.
I opened my eyes.
"Release it."
My father stared.
"Are you sure?"
"No."
I looked at my mother.
"But I'm done letting fear make my decisions."
My mother smiled.
May you like
"Now you sound like me."
