Chapter 19 - WHAT I BUILT

One year later, Blackthorn Manor no longer belonged to Nathan.
I bought it.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I wanted to reclaim the place where I had once believed my life ended.
The mansion became a foundation.
A safe residence for women escaping abusive marriages.
A legal center.
A financial education program.
A place where women could learn how to protect their money, documents, businesses, and futures.
The first time I walked into the renovated grand hall, I stopped beneath the chandelier.
The whip was gone.
The champagne glasses were gone.
The fear was gone.
My mother stood beside me.
"You changed everything."
"No."
I looked around.
"We did."
My father walked in carrying two coffees.
He handed one to me.
"You know," he said, "your mother thinks you should run the foundation."
"I already do."
He smiled.
"She also thinks you should run Vale Dominion."
I looked at him.
"I don't want your empire."
My father laughed.
"Good."
"Good?"
"Because I want you to build your own."
I looked at the empty hall.
For the first time, I understood what he meant.
Nathan had built an empire to control people.
Victor had built one to control governments.
My father had built one to protect his family.
And I would build something different.
Something that didn't require fear.
Something that didn't depend on silence.
Something that belonged entirely to me.
I touched the sapphire pendant around my neck.
The recording device was gone.
May you like
I didn't need it anymore.
