Chapter 5 - THE SECRET IN THE SAFE

At 10:15 that night, the house was silent.
The forty guests had gone.
The driveway was empty.
The champagne tower was gone.
The gold plates were packed away.
For the first time in years, I could hear the house breathe.
I made tea.
Then I opened my grandfather's old safe.
Inside were documents I had protected for decades.
Stocks.
Property deeds.
Trust agreements.
Life insurance policies.
And one envelope marked:
DANIEL.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter written by my late husband.
He had died when Daniel was nineteen.
The letter had been written six weeks before his death.
"Margaret,
Our boy will someday think that love means protecting him from consequences.
Don't let him.
The greatest gift you can give him is the chance to become responsible for his own decisions.
Love him.
But never confuse love with surrender.
—Thomas"
I read it twice.
Then I cried.
Not because of Vanessa.
Not because of the party.
Because I realized my husband had understood something I had forgotten.
I had protected Daniel from every consequence.
Now I had to stop.
The next morning, I called my attorney.
"There's more."
He paused.
"What?"
"I want the full investigation."
"You mean the refinancing?"
"Everything."
He understood.
"Fraud?"
"Potentially."
I looked out the window.
Daniel was standing across the street.
Alone.
Watching the house.
For one moment, I almost opened the door.
Then I remembered the forged signature.
May you like
I closed the curtain.
