Chapter 11 - DANIEL'S SECOND CHANCE

Daniel moved into a small apartment.

No pool.

No marble kitchen.

No gated driveway.

Just a two-bedroom unit over a bakery.

He got a job.

Then another.

He began paying back debts.

Most importantly, he stopped asking me for money.

Months passed.

One Sunday afternoon, he came to my house.

He stood on the porch holding a paper bag.

"I brought pie."

I smiled.

"You remembered."

"Apple."

"Your father's favorite."

"I know."

We sat on the porch.

For an hour, we talked about everything except Vanessa.

Eventually, Daniel looked at me.

"Do you hate me?"

I thought about it.

"No."

"Are you disappointed?"

"Deeply."

He nodded.

"I deserve that."

"You deserve the opportunity to rebuild."

He looked at the house.

"Do I still have a mother?"

My eyes filled.

"You never stopped."

He cried.

So did I.

We hugged.

But forgiveness did not erase consequences.

He knew that.

May you like

And for the first time, so did I.
