Chapter 17 - THE WOMAN IN THE KITCHEN

A year after the Easter disaster, I stood in my kitchen again.

The same marble counters.

The same stove.

The same rosemary sauce.

But I wasn't the same woman.

My hair was grayer.

My back was a little stiffer.

My voice was calmer.

My boundaries were stronger.

I looked at the room and remembered Vanessa's words.

"Maybe you should stay upstairs while real people celebrate."

I almost laughed.

She had wanted a perfect party.

Instead, she got a lesson.

So did I.

The real people were not the ones wearing designer clothes.

They were the ones who stayed when the champagne disappeared.

The ones who called when there was nothing to gain.

The ones who knew the difference between a house and a home.

Daniel walked into the kitchen.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"The sauce smells incredible."

I smiled.

"Don't taste it."

He grinned.

"Why?"

"Because you learned nothing."

He laughed.

And suddenly, the kitchen was full of something more valuable than luxury.

May you like

It was full of peace.
