Chapter 9 - THE MAN IN THE REFLECTION

The photograph contained a reflection Charles probably never noticed.

A man stood across the street holding a camera.

Julia enhanced the image.

The face became visible.

Ryan recognized him immediately.

“Victor Sloan.”

“Who is he?”

“My father’s private security director.”

Victor had worked for Harrison Global for twenty-two years.

He handled internal investigations.

Executive protection.

Confidential “problems.”

Julia subpoenaed expense records.

Victor had been in the same city as me on every date Michael and I met.

There were hotel payments.

Rental cars.

Surveillance equipment.

The affair had been built carefully.

Ryan stared at the timeline.

“I wanted to believe it.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“I wanted proof you betrayed me because being angry was easier than admitting I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

“That you were smarter than me.”

I blinked.

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“You developed the technology that made Harrison Global famous.”

“You never cared about the money.”

“You challenged my father.”

“You challenged me.”

“And instead of being proud of you, part of me was terrified you would eventually realize you didn’t need me.”

I had waited years for honesty.

I hadn’t expected it to be so ugly.

Or so human.

“You punished me for your insecurity.”

“Yes.”

He did not defend himself.

That mattered.

Julia’s phone rang.

She listened.

Then stood.

“They found Victor.”

“Where?”

“Wisconsin.”

“He was trying to cross into Canada.”

Federal investigators detained him that night.

By morning, he wanted immunity.

His testimony blew open everything.

Charles had ordered surveillance.

Charles had authorized forged photographs.

Charles had instructed Ryan’s assistant to block my calls.

Charles had personally threatened me when I came to the office pregnant.

But Victor revealed one more thing.

A recording existed.

Ryan and I listened together.

Charles’s voice filled Julia’s conference room.

“Once Ryan believes she cheated, he’ll do the rest himself.”

Victor asked,

“And the pregnancy?”

Charles answered,

“If she’s pregnant, make sure he never knows.”

Ryan looked physically ill.

Then Victor asked why.

Charles’s response changed the entire case.

“Because if Ryan has legitimate heirs, I lose the company.”

I closed my eyes.

For five years, I had blamed Ryan.

Ryan had deserved part of that blame.

But someone else had built the trap.

And now we finally knew why.

Then Victor’s attorney delivered one final item.

A key.

It opened a Northstar storage vault outside Hartford.

Inside, Victor claimed, we would find the original Project Orion records.

Ryan stared at the key.

“What exactly is in there?”

Victor answered.

May you like

“Proof Charles Harrison never intended Ryan to inherit anything.”

“And proof Ryan Harrison may not be a Harrison at all.”
