Chapter 6 - MEETING THEIR FATHER

The next morning, I told all three boys.

I kept it simple.

Ryan was their father.

He had not known they existed.

Adults had made mistakes.

None of those mistakes were the boys’ fault.

Mason asked whether Ryan could build Lego castles.

Liam wanted to know if he liked pancakes.

Noah asked nothing.

That worried me most.

Ryan came at ten.

He brought no gifts.

I appreciated that.

He sat on the floor.

Within twenty minutes, Mason had climbed onto his back.

Liam was explaining the rules of a game nobody else understood.

Noah watched from across the room.

Ryan noticed.

He didn’t force him.

After lunch, the boys showed him their bedroom.

Three beds.

Three sets of drawings.

Three framed photographs from every birthday Ryan had missed.

He stopped in front of one.

The boys were two.

Chocolate cake covered their faces.

Ryan touched the frame.

“I should have been there.”

I stood behind him.

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

“But I want the chance to know them.”

“That depends on them.”

“And you.”

“And whether you can accept that being their biological father doesn’t make you their authority.”

Ryan nodded.

“I can.”

I almost laughed.

Five years earlier, he would have fought that sentence for an hour.

Then his phone rang.

Charles.

Ryan rejected it.

The call came again.

This time I said,

“Answer.”

He put it on speaker.

Charles spoke immediately.

“Ryan, come home.”

“No.”

“You’re confused.”

“I saw the letter you gave Emily.”

Silence.

“You intercepted her pregnancy.”

Charles sighed.

Not guilty.

Annoyed.

“She was destroying your life.”

“She was carrying my sons.”

“She was carrying leverage.”

Ryan’s entire face hardened.

“They are children.”

“They are Harrison heirs.”

“No.”

Ryan looked toward the playroom.

“They are my sons.”

Charles became quieter.

“You have no idea what those children represent.”

I stepped closer.

“What do they represent, Charles?”

Silence.

Then he laughed softly.

“So she’s listening.”

“Yes.”

“Emily, you should have stayed gone.”

Ryan clenched his fists.

“Don’t threaten her.”

“I am warning both of you.”

“Project Orion never ended.”

The room went cold.

Ryan asked,

“What did you do to me?”

Charles did not answer directly.

Instead, he said,

“The boys inherited something we spent forty years protecting.”

My heartbeat increased.

“What?”

I asked.

Charles paused.

Then he gave us the first answer.

“Not a disease.”

“An ownership key.”

Ryan stared at me.

Charles continued.

“And if Emily has already tested their DNA, she may have activated it.”

The call ended.

Within seconds, my email refreshed.

Three new banking notifications appeared.

Accounts I had never opened.

May you like

Each account belonged to one of my sons.

And together, they contained over eight hundred million dollars.
