Chapter 11 - NOBODY TOUCHES MY SONS

Ryan called me immediately.

Within minutes, police were outside the house.

The preschool locked down.

The boys were safe.

But my fear turned into anger unlike anything I had felt before.

Charles could manipulate adults.

He could forge photographs.

He could steal patents.

He could destroy marriages.

But he had made one mistake.

He had brought my children into it.

I called him.

He answered calmly.

“Emily.”

“If anyone comes near my sons again, I will spend every dollar I have making sure you never see the outside of a courtroom.”

Charles chuckled.

“You always were dramatic.”

“And you always underestimated me.”

“I know about Arthur.”

Silence.

That reached him.

“I know Ryan is Arthur’s son.”

His voice became colder.

“You don’t understand the history.”

“I understand theft.”

“I understand forged records.”

“And I understand threatening children.”

“You think Ryan can protect them?”

“I don’t need Ryan to protect them.”

That answer mattered to me.

Ryan heard it too.

He stood across the room.

Charles said,

“You should ask Ryan why he really boarded your flight.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“He didn’t sit beside you by accident.”

The line went dead.

I turned toward Ryan.

He had gone pale.

“What is he talking about?”

Ryan didn’t answer immediately.

“Ryan.”

“I knew you were on the flight.”

My stomach dropped.

“You said it was coincidence.”

“I never said that.”

“You let me believe it.”

He looked ashamed.

“I saw your name on the passenger manifest.”

“How?”

“Harrison Aviation receives executive travel alerts.”

“So you deliberately changed seats.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

His answer came quietly.

“Because I wanted to hurt you.”

The admission felt like a slap.

Ryan continued.

“I had seen an article about your new environmental foundation.”

“You looked happy.”

“Successful.”

“I convinced myself you had walked away from our marriage and gotten everything you wanted.”

“So you sat beside me to remind me you were richer?”

“Yes.”

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was pathetic.

“You really hadn’t changed at all when you boarded that plane.”

“No.”

“And three hours later you met your sons.”

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“That was the moment I realized what kind of man I had become.”

I looked away.

He stepped closer but did not touch me.

“I cannot change why I sat beside you.”

“But I can choose why I’m still here.”

Before I could answer, Julia rushed inside.

“Police traced the photograph of Noah.”

“To who?”

She held up a tablet.

The image had been sent from a Harrison Global device.

Registered to Charles’s executive office.

Ryan stared at it.

Julia continued.

“And there’s more.”

“Investigators searched his office.”

“They found the original letters Emily sent about the pregnancy.”

May you like

All seven of them.

Still sealed.
