Chapter 16 - THE COURTROOM WHERE EVERYTHING CHANGED

The emergency hearing drew reporters from across the country.

Charles arrived through the front entrance.

He smiled at cameras.

He still believed confidence could substitute for innocence.

Ryan entered with me.

Not ahead of me.

Not behind me.

Beside me.

The boys stayed home.

I would not let their faces become entertainment.

Charles’s attorney argued that Harrison Global needed to protect the children’s inheritance.

Julia stood.

“Protect them from whom?”

Then she presented Arthur’s journal.

Eleanor’s custody documents.

Victor Sloan’s confession.

My intercepted pregnancy letters.

Angela’s payments.

The fertility clinic records.

And the forged affair photographs.

Charles’s smile slowly disappeared.

Then Ryan testified.

His attorney asked whether I had hidden the children intentionally.

Ryan answered,

“No.”

“Did Ms. Parker attempt to notify you?”

“Yes.”

“Did she deceive you about an affair?”

“No.”

“Then why did your marriage end?”

Ryan looked at the judge.

“Because I accused my wife before I listened to her.”

“And because my father manufactured evidence that confirmed what I was already afraid to believe.”

Charles stared at him.

Ryan continued.

“Emily Parker did not destroy our marriage.”

“I did.”

“I was manipulated.”

“But I made the choice.”

I looked down.

Those were the words I needed five years ago.

Hearing them now did not repair the past.

But they finally put the truth where it belonged.

Then Eleanor testified.

Charles’s attorneys attacked her credibility.

She did not break.

Finally, Julia called one unexpected witness.

Daniel Cross.

Charles’s own attorney.

Charles stood.

“What are you doing?”

Cross would not look at him.

Federal prosecutors had offered him immunity.

He produced a recording from two months earlier.

Charles’s voice filled the courtroom.

“If Emily refuses to cooperate, make her look unstable.”

“If Ryan interferes, remind the board he abandoned three heirs.”

“And if neither works?”

Cross asked.

Charles replied,

“Separate the boys legally and control the trust through guardianship.”

A shocked sound moved through the courtroom.

My hands became fists.

Ryan’s face went cold.

Charles finally understood.

He had lost.

The judge denied every petition involving my sons.

Then she referred the evidence for criminal investigation.

Federal agents were waiting outside.

But before they could approach, Charles looked directly at me.

“You think you won?”

I said nothing.

He smiled.

“Ask Ryan what happened the night your grandfather died.”

Ryan turned toward him.

“What are you talking about?”

Charles laughed.

May you like

Then agents led him away.

And once again, the man had left one final poison behind him.
