Chapter 8 - THE BILLIONAIRE WHO WALKED AWAY

The shareholder meeting was broadcast nationally.

Charles expected Ryan to defend his position.

Instead, Ryan stepped behind the podium and placed a single page on the table.

“I resign as Chief Executive Officer of Harrison Global, effective immediately.”

The room erupted.

Charles stood.

“You have lost your mind.”

Ryan continued.

“I will retain my shares.”

“I will also cooperate with an independent investigation into Project Orion, Northstar Biological Research, and any attempts to interfere with my former wife’s intellectual property.”

Every camera turned toward Charles.

His face went white.

Ryan wasn’t finished.

“Finally, I will not permit three minor children to be used as weapons in a corporate control dispute.”

“My sons’ names will remain private.”

“They owe this company nothing.”

Reporters shouted.

Charles rushed toward him.

Ryan stepped away.

For the first time in his life, he left the Harrison stage voluntarily.

I watched from Julia’s office.

Part of me was proud.

Part of me hated myself for being proud.

One right decision did not erase five years.

Afterward, Ryan came to the house.

The boys were building a cardboard spaceship.

He removed his expensive jacket and joined them.

Mason drew control buttons across his white shirt with a permanent marker.

Ryan looked down.

Then laughed.

I had forgotten that laugh.

The real one.

Before money and suspicion had swallowed everything.

That evening, after the boys fell asleep, we sat on the back porch.

“I saw the resignation.”

“Are you angry?”

“Why would I be?”

“Because your patents could lose value if Harrison stock crashes.”

“I care more about the truth.”

Ryan nodded.

“You always did.”

The sentence hung between us.

Then he said,

“I’m sorry.”

“You’ve said that.”

“I know.”

“I’m going to keep saying it.”

“Why?”

“Because I spent five years believing you betrayed me.”

“And now I know you were trying to protect me.”

I looked away.

“I should have broken the confidentiality agreement.”

“You shouldn’t have needed to.”

Silence.

Then Ryan spoke again.

“There’s something else I need to tell you.”

I looked back.

“What?”

“When the divorce was finalized, I received a package.”

My body tensed.

“From who?”

“I thought it was anonymous.”

“Inside were photographs of you and Michael Reeves entering that hotel.”

I frowned.

“There shouldn’t have been photographs.”

“There were.”

Ryan pulled them from an envelope.

I recognized the hotel.

Michael and I had attended the Northstar meeting there.

But one photograph was wrong.

It showed Michael touching my face.

That never happened.

I examined it closely.

Then I saw the reflection in the window.

The image had been altered.

Poorly.

Ryan whispered,

May you like

“My father didn’t just let me misunderstand.”

“He manufactured the affair.”
