Chapter 24 : The Truth That Was Buried

The world stopped moving.
At least, that was how it felt to Daniel.
The gunshot.
Charles Whitmore lying on the ground.
Security rushing everywhere.
Rachel shouting through his phone.
And Claire Bennett standing beneath the estate lights with a weapon in her hand.
His mother.
The woman who had returned after thirty-eight years.
The woman who claimed she came back to tell the truth.
The woman now standing over the man who supposedly controlled everything.
"Claire..."
Daniel's voice was barely audible.
She looked at him.
And the pain in her eyes was worse than anger.
"Daniel, listen to me."
Rachel's voice exploded through the phone.
"Do not move toward her."
Daniel didn't answer.
He couldn't.
Because his mind was fighting itself.
The woman in front of him was his mother.
But she was also holding a gun.
Security surrounded Claire within seconds.
She dropped the weapon.
Not because she surrendered.
Because she wanted Daniel to see something.
"I didn't shoot him."
Nobody believed her.
Except Daniel.
And that terrified him.
Because after everything...
Some part of him still wanted to believe her.
Charles was rushed inside.
Alive.
Barely.
The bullet had missed his heart.
But before the ambulance left, he grabbed Daniel's arm.
His voice was weak.
"Don't trust her."
Daniel froze.
Charles looked at Claire.
"She was never innocent."
Then he lost consciousness.
Three hours later, the estate became a crime scene.
Rachel sat across from Claire in the interrogation room.
Daniel watched from behind the glass.
He didn't know what he wanted.
Answers.
Or distance.
Claire looked exhausted.
Older.
Like thirty-eight years of running had finally caught up with her.
Rachel placed the weapon on the table.
"Your fingerprints are on this."
Claire nodded.
"I know."
"You were standing near Charles when he was shot."
"Yes."
"You had motive."
Claire looked down.
"Yes."
Rachel leaned forward.
"Then help me understand."
Claire was silent.
Finally, she whispered:
"Because Charles deserved to answer for what he did."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Not again.
Another person who believed they had the right to destroy someone because they felt justified.
Another person who confused revenge with justice.
Rachel continued.
"What did Charles do?"
Claire looked toward the glass.
Toward Daniel.
"Everything."
She explained.
Thirty-eight years earlier, Charles Whitmore discovered that Victor planned to leave his empire and start a new life with Claire.
Charles saw Victor's happiness as weakness.
He believed powerful men should never be controlled by emotions.
So he manipulated everyone.
He convinced Adrian Cross that Victor was stealing his future.
He convinced Victor that Michael wanted to take Daniel away.
He convinced Jonathan that Claire abandoned him.
"He didn't create their pain," Claire said.
"He simply fed it."
Daniel finally entered the room.
Everyone turned.
Claire stood.
"Daniel..."
He raised a hand.
"No more lies."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I know."
"No more protecting me."
"I know."
"No more deciding what I can handle."
Claire nodded.
"You are right."
Daniel sat across from her.
"Tell me everything."
Claire looked at him.
"The night I disappeared..."
She took a deep breath.
"I didn't leave you."
Daniel waited.
"I was taken."
The room went silent.
"By who?"
Claire looked toward the glass.
"Charles."
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
"But you said you ran."
"I did."
"After he took you?"
Claire nodded.
"Charles wanted custody of you."
"Why?"
"Because he believed you belonged to him."
Claire explained the truth.
Charles had arranged everything.
He had manipulated legal documents.
He had pressured Victor.
He had used Adrian.
He had even convinced Claire that disappearing was the only way to protect Daniel.
"I left because Charles told me if I stayed..."
Her voice broke.
"He would make sure you never had a normal life."
Daniel stared at her.
"And Michael?"
Claire smiled sadly.
"Michael was the only person who believed me."
She wiped her tears.
"He helped me escape."
"Then why didn't he tell me?"
"Because I begged him."
Daniel looked away.
"He sacrificed his relationship with me."
"Yes."
For the first time, Daniel understood.
The people who loved him had not always made the right choices.
But sometimes...
They made impossible choices.
A detective entered the room.
"Rachel."
She stepped outside.
A few minutes later, she returned with a serious expression.
"Daniel."
He stood.
"What?"
"We found something in Charles Whitmore's private files."
She placed a document on the table.
Daniel read the first line.
His face changed.
"What is this?"
Rachel answered:
"Proof that Charles was responsible for Adrian Cross's death."
Daniel looked up.
"And Jonathan?"
Rachel shook her head.
"Worse."
She placed another file down.
"Charles planned Jonathan's entire life."
Daniel stared.
"He created him?"
Rachel nodded.
"From the beginning."
Suddenly, Daniel's phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
He answered.
A voice came through.
A voice he knew.
Jonathan.
"Daniel."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Where are you?"
A pause.
"Somewhere Charles can never reach me."
Daniel looked at Rachel.
"Why are you calling?"
Jonathan's voice was different.
No anger.
No arrogance.
Only exhaustion.
"Because you were right."
Daniel stayed silent.
"About what?"
Jonathan whispered:
"I was never angry at you."
A pause.
"I was angry that nobody saved me."
Daniel felt something break inside.
"Jonathan..."
"I need you to know something."
"What?"
Jonathan took a shaky breath.
"Charles has one last secret."
Daniel waited.
"He didn't just manipulate our family."
A pause.
"He created another one."
The call ended.
Rachel immediately began tracing it.
Daniel looked at Claire.
At the files.
At everything that had destroyed generations.
And realized the nightmare still wasn't over.
Because Charles Whitmore had spent decades building something.
A legacy.
A system.
A plan.
May you like
And somewhere out there...
The final piece was still missing.
