Chapter 20: The Mother Who Came Back

For thirty-eight years, Daniel Carter had imagined this moment.
Not consciously.
Not in dreams.
Not even in his deepest thoughts.
Because a person could not miss someone they never knew.
A mother was supposed to be a memory.
A voice.
A touch.
Something real.
But Daniel had nothing.
Only an empty space where someone should have been.
And now that empty space was standing in front of him.
Alive.
Breathing.
Looking at him with tears in her eyes.
"Claire?"
His own voice sounded unfamiliar.
The woman nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Daniel stared.
"No."
The word escaped before he could stop it.
The woman flinched.
Not from anger.
From pain.
"I know."
She whispered.
"I know what this looks like."
Rachel immediately stepped between them.
"Nobody moves."
Claire raised her hands.
"I didn't come here to hurt him."
Rachel's eyes narrowed.
"Then why have you been hiding for thirty-eight years?"
Claire looked at Daniel.
"Because I was afraid."
Daniel almost laughed.
Afraid?
Everyone had been afraid.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
And somehow, he was always the person left in the dark.
"You don't get to say that."
Claire lowered her head.
"I know."
"You disappeared."
"Yes."
"You let me believe you abandoned me."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I never abandoned you."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Then where were you?"
The question hung in the air.
For the first time, Claire looked broken.
"Running."
"From who?"
Claire looked toward the photograph on the table.
"From them."
Rachel kept her weapon lowered but ready.
"Start explaining."
Claire nodded.
"Because you deserve the truth."
She looked at Daniel.
"All of it."
They moved into the living room.
Nobody sat.
Nobody trusted anyone.
Claire remained standing.
"I met Victor when I was twenty-one."
Daniel watched her carefully.
"He was brilliant. Powerful. Charming."
A sad smile crossed her face.
"He made me believe he could protect me."
"Then what happened?"
Claire looked down.
"I discovered what he was really capable of."
Daniel frowned.
"Victor?"
Claire nodded.
"But not the Victor you know from recent years."
She looked at him.
"Back then, Victor wasn't obsessed with revenge."
"He was obsessed with control."
Daniel remembered the man from prison.
The man who destroyed lives because he believed people belonged to him.
It suddenly made sense.
Claire continued.
"When I became pregnant with you, Victor wanted everything decided."
"What do you mean?"
"He wanted to choose where we lived. Who I spoke to. Who raised you."
Daniel's face hardened.
"He wanted ownership."
Claire nodded.
"Yes."
"But Michael..."
Claire looked surprised.
"Michael?"
Daniel looked confused.
"What?"
She whispered:
"Michael saved you."
The room became silent.
"You knew?"
Claire nodded.
"He was the only person who helped me escape."
Daniel stared.
"But he lied to me."
Claire closed her eyes.
"He lied because I asked him to."
That sentence changed everything.
Daniel stepped back.
"What?"
Claire looked at him.
"The night I disappeared, I made Michael promise me something."
"What?"
"That he would never tell you about me."
Daniel shook his head.
"Why?"
"Because Victor was looking for you."
"Years later?"
Claire nodded.
"You don't understand."
She looked toward the window.
"Victor didn't want his son back."
A pause.
"He wanted his possession returned."
Rachel crossed her arms.
"Then why did Adrian Cross become involved?"
Claire's expression changed.
"Adrian was the most dangerous person I ever met."
Daniel listened carefully.
"Victor's friend?"
"Yes."
"What did he want?"
Claire laughed bitterly.
"The same thing everyone around Victor wanted."
"What?"
"Power."
Claire explained.
Adrian had discovered that Victor's greatest weakness was Daniel.
A son he could never control.
A child who could become the one person who proved Victor was not all-powerful.
So Adrian created a plan.
Destroy Victor.
Take control of his empire.
And use Daniel as leverage.
"He convinced Victor that Michael had stolen you."
Daniel's eyes widened.
"So Victor spent decades hunting Michael?"
"Yes."
"Because of Adrian?"
Claire nodded.
"But Adrian underestimated one thing."
"What?"
"Michael loved you."
The words struck Daniel harder than he expected.
Michael.
The man who raised him.
The man who had lied.
The man who had hidden the truth.
But also the man who stayed.
"Then why did you come back now?"
Claire looked at him.
"Because Adrian wasn't the only person who survived."
Rachel immediately reacted.
"What does that mean?"
Claire hesitated.
Then she reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small envelope.
"I found this two weeks ago."
She handed it to Rachel.
Rachel opened it.
Her face changed.
"What?"
Daniel looked between them.
"What is it?"
Rachel slowly looked up.
"It's a death certificate."
"For who?"
Rachel answered quietly:
"Adrian Cross."
Daniel frowned.
"We already knew he was dead."
Rachel shook her head.
"No."
She turned the paper around.
"This certificate was issued last month."
Silence.
Daniel stared.
"That's impossible."
Claire whispered:
"Because Adrian Cross didn't die six years ago."
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Rachel immediately reached for her phone.
"I need to verify this."
Daniel looked at Claire.
"You knew?"
Claire nodded.
"I knew someone was using Adrian's name."
"Who?"
Claire looked toward the dark window.
And her answer made Daniel's blood run cold.
"Someone who learned everything from him."
At that exact moment, Daniel's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
Slowly, Daniel answered.
No one spoke.
Then a familiar voice came through.
A voice he had heard before.
A voice from the past.
"Hello, Daniel."
His grip tightened.
"Who is this?"
A quiet laugh.
"You finally met your mother."
Daniel froze.
The voice continued.
"But now you need to meet the person who replaced her."
The call ended.
Rachel immediately looked at Claire.
"Who was that?"
Claire's face turned pale.
Because for the first time since appearing...
She looked truly terrified.
"Someone I thought was dead."
Daniel stared.
"Who?"
May you like
Claire whispered:
"Your brother."
