Chapter 21: The Brother Nobody Knew

The word stayed in the room long after Claire said it.

Brother.

A word Daniel had never expected to hear.

A word that felt impossible.

Wrong.

"You have a brother?"

Daniel's voice was quiet.

But everyone heard the pain underneath.

Claire looked at him.

"I didn't know how to tell you."

Daniel stepped back.

"No."

He shook his head.

"That's not an explanation."

Claire swallowed.

"I know."

"No, you don't."

His voice rose slightly.

"You don't get to walk into my life after thirty-eight years and keep saying you were afraid."

Claire looked down.

"I deserve that."

Daniel stared at her.

"Who is he?"

Rachel remained focused.

"Claire, we need a name."

Claire hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Jonathan Bennett."

Daniel frowned.

"Bennett?"

"My last name before I met Victor."

She looked at him.

"Jonathan was your half-brother."

The room became silent.

"Half?"

Claire nodded.

"Before Victor, there was someone else."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Another secret.

Another person who existed outside his world.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

Claire's voice broke.

"Because Jonathan was the reason I ran."

Daniel looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Claire sat down slowly.

"When Jonathan was born, his father abandoned us."

She looked at the old photograph.

"I was young. I made mistakes. I trusted the wrong people."

"And Jonathan?"

"He grew up angry."

A pause.

"Very angry."

Claire explained that Jonathan had always believed the world had stolen everything from him.

A father.

A family.

A future.

When Claire met Victor and later became pregnant with Daniel, Jonathan saw it as another betrayal.

"He thought I replaced him."

Daniel frowned.

"With me?"

Claire nodded.

"He believed you were the reason I forgot him."

Rachel looked through the files.

"Where has he been all these years?"

Claire shook her head.

"I don't know."

"But you knew he was dangerous."

"Yes."

"How?"

Claire looked at Daniel.

"Because he contacted me before I disappeared."

Daniel felt a chill.

"What did he say?"

Claire closed her eyes.

"He told me that if I couldn't give him the family he wanted..."

A pause.

"He would destroy the family I built."

Daniel remembered Victor's words.

The people closest to you.

The people who know where to place the knife.

Suddenly everything felt connected.

Adrian.

Victor.

Claire.

Jonathan.

A lifetime of secrets.

Rachel received a notification on her phone.

She checked it.

Then immediately stood.

"What?"

Daniel noticed her expression.

"What happened?"

Rachel turned the screen around.

A security image appeared.

A man entering Carter Holdings.

Daniel stared.

The face was partially hidden.

But he recognized the posture.

The confidence.

The way he moved.

"No."

Rachel looked at him.

"You know him?"

Daniel couldn't answer.

Because he did.

He had seen that man before.

At business conferences.

At charity events.

At Carter Holdings meetings.

Always in the background.

Always watching.

"Who is he?"

Daniel finally whispered.

Rachel zoomed in.

"His name is Jonathan Bennett."

The room went silent.

Daniel felt like the ground disappeared.

His brother had been beside him.

Watching him.

For years.

"How?"

Claire looked devastated.

"I don't know."

Daniel turned toward her.

"But you knew he existed."

"Yes."

"And you said nothing."

"I thought he was gone."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Everyone thinks someone is gone."

The next morning, Carter Holdings went into lockdown.

Rachel coordinated with federal agents.

Every employee was questioned.

Every security record was reviewed.

And then they found something disturbing.

Jonathan hadn't broken into the company.

He had access.

A full employee badge.

A private office.

A salary.

A position.

Daniel stared at the records.

"How long?"

Rachel answered:

"Seven years."

His stomach dropped.

Seven years.

Jonathan had been inside his company.

Inside his life.

Olivia found Daniel alone in his office.

"You haven't eaten."

He didn't respond.

She walked closer.

"What did they find?"

Daniel looked at her.

"My brother."

Olivia froze.

"What?"

"His name is Jonathan."

She sat down slowly.

"Daniel..."

He noticed something.

A flicker.

A hesitation.

Again.

"You know him too?"

Olivia immediately shook her head.

"No."

But Daniel saw it.

The smallest reaction.

The same one she had when he mentioned Adrian.

"Olivia."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I met him once."

Daniel went still.

"When?"

"Before we got married."

The silence between them was unbearable.

"Why?"

Olivia looked away.

"Because he contacted me."

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

"What did he want?"

"He wanted information."

"About me?"

She nodded.

"About your family."

Daniel stood.

"Did you give it to him?"

"No."

The answer came instantly.

"I refused."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

Olivia started crying.

"Because he threatened you."

Daniel stared.

"What did he say?"

Olivia whispered:

"He said if I told you..."

"He would make sure you lost everyone you loved."

That night, Daniel sat beside Ethan's crib.

His son slept peacefully.

A child who knew nothing about betrayal.

Nothing about secrets.

Nothing about the darkness surrounding his family.

Daniel touched his son's tiny hand.

And made a promise.

No matter what happened.

No matter who came for them.

He would not allow history to repeat itself.

At midnight, every television in the Carter house suddenly turned on.

Daniel jumped up.

The screen was black.

Then white letters appeared.

A message.

Only one sentence.

YOU TOOK MY LIFE. NOW I'LL TAKE YOURS.

Daniel grabbed his phone.

Rachel answered immediately.

"Daniel?"

His voice was low.

"He's here."

"Who?"

Daniel looked at the screen.

The answer appeared beneath the first message.

A name.

JONATHAN.

Then the screen changed.

A live video appeared.

A camera feed.

Inside Carter Holdings.

Daniel recognized the room.

His office.

His desk.

His personal files.

And standing behind the chair...

Was Jonathan Bennett.

Older.

Calm.

Smiling.

He looked directly into the camera.

May you like

And spoke.

"Hello, little brother."
