Chapter 19 : The Secret Olivia Carried

The silence that followed Daniel's question felt heavier than any answer.

"Do you know Adrian Cross?"

Olivia stood frozen in the middle of the living room.

For several seconds, she didn't blink.

She didn't move.

She didn't even breathe.

And Daniel noticed.

Because after everything he had survived, he had learned one painful lesson:

People could lie with words.

But they couldn't always control their first reaction.

"Daniel..."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

He looked at her carefully.

"That's not an answer."

Olivia lowered her eyes.

The woman who had faced danger without hesitation.

The woman who had protected their children.

The woman who had stood beside him when everyone else betrayed him.

Now looked afraid.

"I knew the name."

Daniel's heart sank.

"You knew him?"

"No."

"Then why did you react like that?"

Olivia swallowed.

"Because I was hoping you would never find out."

Those words hurt more than any accusation.

Daniel stepped back.

"Find out what?"

Olivia looked toward the hallway.

Toward the room where their children slept.

Then she walked to the kitchen table and sat down.

"I need to tell you something."

Daniel remained standing.

"How long?"

She looked up.

"What?"

"How long have you known?"

Olivia closed her eyes.

"Since before we met."

The answer felt impossible.

"Explain."

Olivia took a shaky breath.

"My father worked for Adrian Cross."

Daniel stared.

"What?"

"He was his financial advisor."

She looked down at her hands.

"When I was a child, I heard his name all the time."

Daniel walked closer.

"But what does that have to do with me?"

Olivia hesitated.

"Everything."

She opened a drawer and removed an old envelope.

Daniel recognized the handwriting immediately.

Adrian Cross.

His stomach tightened.

"Where did you get that?"

Olivia looked ashamed.

"My father gave it to me before he died."

Daniel stared at the envelope.

"You had this?"

"Yes."

"For how long?"

"Eight years."

The room went silent.

Eight years.

Eight years of marriage.

Eight years of trust.

Eight years without knowing.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Olivia's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I didn't know what it meant."

Daniel laughed softly.

Not from humor.

From pain.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

He pointed toward the envelope.

"Everyone has a secret."

Olivia opened the letter.

Inside was a single page.

She handed it to him.

Daniel read.

Olivia,

Your father wanted you protected.

If you ever meet Daniel Carter, understand this:

His life has been surrounded by people who wanted ownership of him.

Do not become another person who takes away his choice.

The truth about Daniel's childhood is dangerous.

But hiding it from him is worse.

If he ever discovers what happened, tell him everything.

Do not make the same mistake we made.

—Adrian

Daniel lowered the letter.

"He knew about us."

Olivia nodded.

"I think so."

"Before we met?"

"Yes."

Daniel felt a chill.

"Was our relationship planned?"

Olivia immediately shook her head.

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Too honestly.

"I met you because I loved you."

She stepped closer.

"Not because of him."

Daniel wanted to believe her.

He did.

But trust had become complicated.

"Why did Adrian care about me?"

Olivia looked away.

"Because he believed you were the key."

"Key to what?"

She hesitated.

Then:

"Victor's downfall."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

"Adrian spent years trying to destroy Victor."

"Why?"

Olivia looked at the old letter.

"Because Victor ruined his life."

Daniel shook his head.

"Victor said Adrian betrayed him."

"They both betrayed each other."

Before Daniel could ask more, his phone rang.

Rachel.

He answered immediately.

"Daniel."

Her voice sounded urgent.

"Where are you?"

"Home."

"Is Olivia with you?"

Daniel looked at his wife.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Good."

Daniel frowned.

"Why?"

Rachel lowered her voice.

"Because I found something."

"What?"

"Someone accessed Carter Holdings' private archives again."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Who?"

Rachel took a breath.

"The access code belonged to Michael Carter."

Daniel looked at Olivia.

Then at the phone.

"No."

"Daniel..."

"My father wouldn't do that."

Rachel remained quiet.

That silence bothered him.

Because Rachel knew Michael.

She knew what kind of man he was.

And yet...

She wasn't defending him.

Twenty minutes later, Daniel and Olivia arrived at Michael's house with Rachel.

The door was unlocked.

That alone was wrong.

Michael never left his door unlocked.

Not once.

Rachel drew her weapon.

"Stay behind me."

They entered slowly.

The house was dark.

Silent.

Too silent.

"Michael?" Daniel called.

No answer.

They moved through every room.

Then Daniel saw it.

On the dining table.

A single folder.

His name written on it.

Inside were dozens of documents.

His birth records.

Medical reports.

Court files.

And one photograph.

A photograph Daniel had never seen before.

It showed Claire Bennett.

Holding baby Daniel.

Standing beside another man.

Not Victor.

Not Michael.

Someone else.

Someone younger.

Someone Daniel recognized.

Because he had seen him before.

On television.

In business meetings.

In newspapers.

A man who had built one of the largest financial empires in America.

Rachel picked up the photograph.

Her face changed.

"Daniel..."

He stared.

"Who is that?"

Rachel whispered:

"Charles Whitmore."

Daniel frowned.

"Who?"

Rachel looked at him.

"The man who financed Victor Hale's original search for you."

The room went cold.

"Why would he have a picture of my mother?"

No one answered.

Then Daniel noticed something written on the back.

A date.

A location.

And three words.

She told him everything.

Suddenly, the lights went out.

Everyone froze.

A sound came from upstairs.

A floorboard.

Someone was inside.

Rachel raised her weapon.

"Police! Show yourself!"

Silence.

Then a voice answered from the darkness.

A woman's voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

"I was wondering when you would finally find me."

Daniel's blood turned cold.

Because he knew that voice.

It was the same voice from the phone call.

The woman who claimed to know the truth about his mother.

The woman who had been watching him.

Rachel moved toward the stairs.

"Who are you?"

The woman stepped into the light.

Daniel stared.

Because the face in front of him belonged to someone he had seen before.

Someone who had been close.

Someone everyone trusted.

She smiled sadly.

"My name is Claire."

Daniel stopped breathing.

His mother's name.

Impossible.

May you like

The woman looked at him.

"I'm sorry it took me thirty-eight years to come home."
