Chapter 22 : The Brother Who Wanted Everything

Daniel stared at the screen.

The man standing inside his office was not a stranger.

That was the worst part.

A stranger could be understood.

A stranger could be fought.

But Jonathan Bennett had spent seven years walking through Daniel's company.

Seven years shaking his hand.

Seven years pretending.

Seven years waiting.

And Daniel had never seen him.

Jonathan smiled at the camera.

"You always had everything, Daniel."

His voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

"People loved you."

Daniel stepped closer to the screen.

"Jonathan."

The man smiled wider.

"So you finally know my name."

Rachel's voice came through the phone.

"Daniel, don't engage with him."

But Daniel couldn't look away.

"Why?"

Jonathan tilted his head.

"Why what?"

"Why did you do this?"

A small laugh.

"That's the question everyone asks."

He walked around Daniel's office.

Touching the books.

The photographs.

The things that represented a life Jonathan believed should have been his.

"Why did Victor chase you?"

"Why did Michael choose you?"

"Why did Claire protect you?"

Jonathan stopped.

"Because everyone chose you."

Daniel felt anger rising.

"You think this was my fault?"

Jonathan's smile disappeared.

"No."

A pause.

"I think it was unfair."

The screen flickered.

A second camera angle appeared.

Another room.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

The old lake house.

The same place where the mystery began.

Jonathan continued:

"Everyone thinks Victor Hale was the monster."

He walked closer to the camera.

"But nobody asks why he became one."

Daniel remained silent.

"Everyone thinks Claire was a victim."

Jonathan laughed.

"But nobody asks what she took from me."

Rachel was already tracing the signal.

"Keep him talking."

Daniel understood.

"Tell me what happened."

Jonathan looked pleased.

Finally.

Someone was listening.

"I was eight years old when Claire left."

Daniel frowned.

"She didn't leave because of me."

Jonathan's eyes hardened.

"That's what she told herself."

The room became silent.

"Do you know what it feels like, Daniel?"

His voice changed.

"To watch someone build a new family while yours disappears?"

Daniel looked away.

"I didn't know."

"Exactly."

Jonathan pointed at the camera.

"You didn't know anything."

The screen showed another image.

A photograph.

Young Jonathan.

Young Claire.

And baby Daniel.

Daniel stared.

"Where did you get that?"

Jonathan smiled.

"From the same place everyone keeps their secrets."

"What does that mean?"

"It means your entire life was built on stolen pieces."

Suddenly Rachel spoke through the phone.

"We found him."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

"He's broadcasting from an old Carter Holdings backup facility."

"Where?"

Rachel gave the location.

Daniel recognized it.

The original company archive building.

Closed for years.

Jonathan wasn't hiding.

He wanted them to come.

"Daniel."

Rachel's voice became serious.

"Do not go there."

But Daniel already knew.

Jonathan wanted him there.

Just like Victor had wanted him.

Just like everyone before him.

They all wanted something.

And Daniel was tired of running.

"I'm going."

"No."

Rachel's voice sharpened.

"You don't understand."

Daniel looked at the screen.

At Jonathan.

At the man who had spent years pretending to be someone else.

"I understand perfectly."

Before leaving, Daniel stopped beside Olivia.

She knew immediately.

"No."

He shook his head.

"I need answers."

"I know."

She grabbed his hand.

"But promise me something."

"What?"

"Come back."

Daniel looked at her.

At the woman who had hidden the truth but still protected him.

At the mother of his children.

"I will."

The abandoned archive building stood at the edge of the city.

Dark.

Empty.

Forgotten.

The perfect place for old secrets.

Rachel arrived with tactical officers.

Michael came too.

Daniel looked surprised.

"Dad."

Michael looked at him.

"I should have told you everything."

Daniel didn't answer.

"I know."

Michael lowered his head.

"But I won't let another person take you from me."

Inside the building, they found the doors unlocked.

Too easy.

Rachel immediately noticed.

"This is a trap."

Daniel nodded.

"I know."

They entered anyway.

The old archive room was filled with boxes.

Thousands of documents.

Family records.

Financial files.

Photographs.

Everything Jonathan had collected.

On the center table sat one folder.

Daniel Carter.

Daniel opened it.

Inside were pages documenting his entire life.

But the final page was different.

A confession.

Written by Jonathan.

I never wanted to hurt Daniel.

I wanted him to understand.

I wanted him to know what it felt like to lose everything.

But every time I got close, someone protected him.

Michael.

Victor.

Claire.

Olivia.

Everyone chose him.

So I decided to remove the choice.

If nobody could love me first...

Nobody would love him either.

Daniel lowered the paper.

"He doesn't hate me."

Rachel looked at him.

"No?"

Daniel shook his head.

"He hates that I was loved."

A slow clap echoed through the room.

Everyone turned.

Jonathan stood on the second floor balcony.

"You finally understand."

Rachel raised her weapon.

"Jonathan Bennett! Step away!"

He ignored her.

Looking only at Daniel.

"You know what the worst part was?"

Daniel said nothing.

Jonathan smiled sadly.

"You weren't even special."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

"You were just the child everyone decided to save."

Jonathan slowly walked down the stairs.

"I spent my whole life trying to prove I mattered."

His voice cracked.

"And then you were born."

Daniel looked at him.

"Jonathan..."

"Don't."

The anger returned.

"Don't say my name like you care."

Suddenly, the building shook.

Everyone froze.

A timer appeared on the wall.

00:02:00

Rachel looked up.

"Bomb."

Jonathan stepped back.

"You see?"

Daniel stared at him.

"This is what you wanted?"

Jonathan looked toward the timer.

"No."

A sad smile appeared.

"This is what they created."

Daniel frowned.

"Who?"

Jonathan looked at Michael.

Then Claire, who had arrived with the officers.

And finally Daniel.

"Everyone who taught me that love had conditions."

The timer continued.

01:30.

Rachel shouted:

"Everyone out!"

But Daniel didn't move.

He looked at Jonathan.

"Come with us."

Jonathan laughed.

"Why?"

"Because you're my brother."

For the first time...

Jonathan looked hurt.

Not angry.

Not powerful.

Just hurt.

The timer reached:

00:45.

Jonathan looked at Daniel.

"You still choose me?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Jonathan stared.

"Even after everything?"

"Yes."

A tear appeared in Jonathan's eye.

And for one second...

Daniel saw the abandoned child behind the monster.

Then Jonathan whispered:

"I'm sorry."

The lights went out.

When they came back on...

Jonathan was gone.

The timer had stopped.

The bomb had been disabled.

But on the floor where he stood...

There was one final note.

Daniel picked it up.

Only four words.

Ask Victor about Charles.

Daniel looked at Rachel.

"Charles."

Rachel's expression changed.

Because she knew exactly who Jonathan meant.

Charles Whitmore.

The billionaire who had been connected to every secret.

Every betrayal.

Every disappearance.

And Daniel finally understood.

Jonathan was not the end.

He was only another piece.

May you like

The real architect of the nightmare...

Had never been found.
