Chapter 18 : The Stranger Who Knew His Name

Daniel spent the next morning staring at the same photograph.
Four adults.
One child.
One night that supposedly changed everything.
But the more he looked at it, the more he realized something terrifying.
Everyone in that picture knew the truth.
Everyone except him.
Olivia found him in the study.
The coffee beside him was untouched.
The documents Rachel had sent were spread across the desk.
"You didn't sleep."
Daniel looked up.
"No."
She walked closer.
"Did you find something?"
He handed her the photograph.
Olivia studied it.
Her eyes stopped on the woman standing behind young Daniel.
"Is that..."
"My mother."
Olivia looked at him carefully.
"I didn't know you had pictures of her."
"Neither did I."
That answer hurt her.
Because she knew what it meant.
Daniel wasn't discovering his past.
He was discovering how much of his life had been hidden from him.
Rachel arrived an hour later.
She carried a thick folder.
"I found Adrian Cross."
Daniel immediately looked up.
"Where?"
Rachel placed the folder on the table.
"Dead."
The room became silent.
"When?"
"Six years ago."
Daniel frowned.
"Then how is he connected?"
Rachel opened the file.
"Because Adrian Cross spent thirty years keeping records."
She removed several pages.
"Financial transfers. Private meetings. Property purchases."
Daniel looked through them.
"What am I looking at?"
Rachel pointed.
"Your childhood."
His expression changed.
"What?"
"Someone was paying attention to your life long before Victor started watching you."
She turned another page.
A list of dates.
Daniel's birthdays.
School events.
Medical records.
Sports competitions.
Every important moment.
The same pattern.
The same obsession.
Someone had been tracking him.
Again.
Daniel clenched his jaw.
"Victor said someone else helped destroy my life."
Rachel nodded.
"And I think he was telling the truth."
Olivia looked worried.
"But who?"
Rachel didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she pulled out one final document.
"A letter."
Daniel stared.
"From Adrian Cross?"
Rachel nodded.
"It was discovered after his death."
"Why didn't anyone see it before?"
"Because it wasn't addressed to the police."
She looked at Daniel.
"It was addressed to you."
The letter was short.
Only a few sentences.
Daniel,
If this reaches you, then Victor failed to protect you from the truth.
Do not believe everything you were told about Claire Bennett.
She was not a victim.
She was not innocent.
But she was not the monster everyone claimed.
The person who destroyed your family is still alive.
And they are closer to you than you think.
Trust carefully.
Because the person who smiles beside you may be the same person who watched you fall.
—Adrian Cross
Daniel read the letter twice.
Then he looked at Rachel.
"Do you think someone close to me is involved?"
Rachel didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
That evening, Daniel visited Victor in prison.
The guards watched carefully as he entered the interview room.
Victor looked older.
Smaller.
Nothing like the powerful man Daniel had imagined.
But his eyes were the same.
The same eyes Daniel saw in the mirror.
Victor looked up.
"You found something."
Daniel sat down.
"Why didn't you tell me about Adrian Cross?"
Victor's expression changed.
For the first time, Daniel saw genuine fear.
"Where did you hear that name?"
"Answer me."
Victor leaned back.
"Adrian was my best friend."
"And?"
Victor looked away.
"And the person who knew exactly how to destroy me."
Daniel studied him.
"You trusted him."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Victor smiled sadly.
"Because sometimes the person closest to you is the one who knows exactly where to place the knife."
Daniel leaned forward.
"What happened to my mother?"
Victor was silent for a long time.
Finally:
"Claire was not the woman you think she was."
"Everyone keeps saying that."
"Because everyone knows pieces of the truth."
Victor looked directly at him.
"But nobody knows all of it."
"Then tell me."
Victor closed his eyes.
"When Claire disappeared, I thought she left us."
A pause.
"Years later, I discovered she didn't leave."
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
"What are you saying?"
Victor whispered:
"She was running."
"From who?"
Victor looked at him.
"From Adrian."
Daniel froze.
"But Adrian died."
Victor nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why are we still talking about him?"
Victor's face became serious.
"Because Adrian wasn't working alone."
The prison room felt smaller.
"Who was with him?"
Victor looked at Daniel.
And for the first time in their entire relationship...
He looked afraid for his son.
"Someone who has been beside you for years."
Daniel stood.
"Who?"
Victor didn't answer.
Instead, he whispered:
"Think about every person who knew your schedule."
"Every person who knew your home."
"Every person who knew your family."
Daniel's mind raced.
Rachel.
Michael.
Olivia.
His employees.
His friends.
Everyone.
When Daniel left the prison, he immediately called Rachel.
"We need to investigate everyone connected to me."
Rachel paused.
"Daniel..."
"What?"
"There is something you should know."
"What?"
Her voice lowered.
"Someone accessed your personal files yesterday."
Daniel stopped walking.
"Who?"
Rachel hesitated.
Then:
"Someone using a security clearance belonging to Carter Holdings."
Daniel's heart sank.
"Impossible."
"Daniel."
"Who has that level of access?"
A long silence.
Then Rachel answered:
"Only three people."
Daniel waited.
"Yourself."
"Your father Michael."
"And your wife Olivia."
The phone slipped slightly in Daniel's hand.
"No."
Rachel immediately responded.
"I'm not accusing anyone."
But Daniel barely heard her.
Because somewhere deep inside...
A terrible thought had already appeared.
A thought he didn't want to believe.
A thought that felt impossible.
Yet familiar.
Because Victor Hale had warned him.
The person who smiles beside you...
May be the same person who watched you fall.
That night, Daniel returned home.
Olivia was waiting.
She smiled when she saw him.
But Daniel noticed something.
A tiny pause.
A moment too long.
Like she had been preparing for this conversation.
"Daniel?"
He looked at the woman he loved.
The mother of his children.
The person who had stood beside him through everything.
Then he asked quietly:
"Olivia..."
Her smile faded.
"Yes?"
"Do you know Adrian Cross?"
The color disappeared from her face.
And Daniel knew.
May you like
Before she even answered.
Something was wrong.
