CHAPTER 9 — THE FAMILY THEY CHOSE TO LOSE

Six months later, Lily was crawling.

She had Claire’s bright eyes.

My stubborn personality.

And the ability to completely destroy my sleep schedule.

I loved every second of it.

Claire had recovered fully.

She started a small online business designing handmade baby products.

The same creativity my mother once criticized became something successful.

People loved her work.

She was finally becoming the woman she had been before everyone convinced her she wasn’t enough.

My relationship with my mother remained distant.

Not because I hated her.

Because forgiveness did not mean pretending nothing happened.

One afternoon, I received an unexpected package.

Inside was a small envelope.

A letter from Owen.

My nephew.

I opened it.

Uncle Ethan,

I’m sorry for what happened. I didn’t understand everything before. But I know Grandma was wrong. Aunt Claire was always nice to me. She didn’t deserve that.

I hope Lily grows up knowing she is loved.

I read it twice.

Then I showed Claire.

She wiped away a tear.

“Your nephew is a good kid.”

“Yes.”

I smiled.

“He learned something the adults forgot.”

“What?”

“That family isn’t just who shares your last name.”

Claire looked at me.

“Then who is family?”

I looked at her.

“At eleven forty-three on New Year’s Eve, I found out.”

She smiled.

Our daughter laughed from the floor.

And for the first time, the memory of that night didn’t only hurt.

It reminded me of the moment I finally chose the right people.
