CHAPTER 5 — THE FAMILY SECRET
My mother tried to recover quickly.
She always did.
That was her talent.
Turning cruelty into concern.
“Ethan, you don’t understand the situation.”
I looked at her.
“Then explain it.”
She sighed.
“Claire was overwhelmed. She wasn’t managing the house properly. Madison and I stepped in.”
“Stepped in?”
I opened my phone.
“Was taking food from a recovering mother part of helping?”
My sister looked away.
My mother’s lips tightened.
“We didn’t take anything.”
I turned the screen toward them.
The delivery records.
The grocery receipts.
The bank transfers.
“Everything I purchased arrived here.”
I pointed at the resort.
“Not Chicago.”
Nobody spoke.
Travis shifted uncomfortably.
“Margaret, maybe we should talk privately.”
“No,” I said.
“Everyone should hear this.”
My mother looked at me like she didn’t recognize me.
“You’re embarrassing me.”
I nodded.
“Interesting.”
I looked around.
“You embarrassed my wife when she was helpless.”
The words hit harder than yelling.
Madison suddenly stood.
“Claire is manipulating you.”
I stared at her.
“She was eleven days after a C-section.”
Madison opened her mouth.
I continued.
“She was alone with a newborn.”
Silence.
“She was eating cold ramen.”
My voice cracked slightly.
“And you were eating lobster.”
For the first time, my mother looked uncomfortable.
But then she said something I never expected.
“She’s not family the way we are.”
The world seemed to stop.
I stared at her.
“What did you say?”
She realized too late.
But the words were already out.
“Ethan, that’s not what I meant.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“That’s exactly what you meant.”
Claire had spent years trying to become part of my family.
She cooked for them.
Remembered birthdays.
Bought gifts.
Listened to their problems.
And secretly, they never accepted her.
They only accepted what she gave them.
My daughter was different.
My wife was different.
They were the family I chose.
I turned away.
“I’m done asking for explanations.”
My mother followed me.
“Where are you going?”
