CHAPTER 6 — THE CONSEQUENCES BEGIN

When I returned to Chicago, Claire was waiting by the window.
She looked nervous.
“How did it go?”
I placed my suitcase down.
“It’s over.”
Her expression changed.
“Ethan…”
“I mean the version of our family where we pretend everything is okay.”
She looked down.
“I’m sorry.”
I walked toward her.
“Why are you apologizing?”
“Because you lost your mother.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I gently touched her hand.
“I lost the person I thought she was.”
That night, I started making changes.
First, I changed the security codes.
Then I contacted the bank.
The accounts I had given my mother access to were frozen.
The family credit cards were canceled.
The payments I had been making for my mother’s expenses stopped immediately.
I wasn’t trying to punish her.
I was protecting my wife.
Two days later, my phone exploded.
Messages.
Calls.
Voicemails.
My mother said I was cruel.
Madison said I was destroying the family.
Relatives called me selfish.
But then something unexpected happened.
One message arrived from my nephew Owen.
A child’s message.
Uncle Ethan, Grandma told us not to tell you. I’m sorry. Mom took Lily’s chocolates. I thought they were for the baby.
I stared at the screen.
Even an eight-year-old understood something the adults refused to.
The next morning, Claire and I took Lily outside for the first time.
The winter air was cold.
But our home was warm.
For the first time in weeks, Claire smiled.
A real smile.
I looked at my daughter.
And I made a promise.
May you like
Nobody would ever make my family feel unwanted again.
Not even my own blood.
