CHAPTER 7 — THE TRUTH THEY COULDN’T HIDE

Three weeks passed after New Year’s Eve.

For the first time since Lily was born, our apartment felt like a home again.

There were blankets on the couch.

Baby bottles drying beside the sink.

Tiny clothes folded neatly on the table.

Normal things.

Beautiful things.

The things Claire should have been enjoying from the beginning.

But my family wasn’t finished.

They never were.

One Monday morning, my phone rang.

It was my aunt Rebecca.

My mother’s older sister.

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

But something told me to answer.

“Ethan,” she said quietly. “I think you need to hear something.”

I leaned back in my chair.

“What?”

There was a long pause.

“Your mother has been telling everyone a different story.”

I closed my eyes.

“What story?”

“She says Claire refused help. She says you’re angry because your wife manipulated you.”

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was predictable.

“Did you believe her?”

“No.”

That surprised me.

“Why?”

“Because I saw the photos.”

I frowned.

“What photos?”

Rebecca lowered her voice.

“Your mother accidentally sent them to the family group chat.”

My stomach tightened.

“What photos?”

“The ones from the apartment.”

I stood up.

“Apartment?”

“She took pictures of Claire.”

My hand froze around the phone.

“What kind of pictures?”

“Claire sitting alone. The empty refrigerator. The messy kitchen.”

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“She was collecting proof,” Rebecca continued.

“Proof of what?”

“That Claire was ‘failing as a wife.’”

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

My own mother had not only abandoned my wife.

She had documented her suffering.

She had planned to use it against her.

I walked into the bedroom.

Claire was sleeping with Lily beside her.

I lowered my voice.

“Rebecca, thank you for telling me.”

“Ethan…”

“Yes?”

“Your mother has always been good at making herself the victim.”

I looked at my wife.

At my daughter.

“She chose the wrong person to hurt this time.”

After the call ended, I sat there for a long time.

Then I opened my laptop.

I created a folder.

Every message.

Every receipt.

Every photo.

Every lie.

I saved everything.

Because I finally understood something:

People who rewrite the truth depend on everyone forgetting what really happened.

I wasn’t going to let that happen.
