CHAPTER 1 — THE VIDEO THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

I stared at Madison’s phone screen while fireworks exploded above Chicago.

For a few seconds, I convinced myself there had to be another explanation.

A misunderstanding.

A mistake.

Anything except the truth forming in front of me.

I pressed play.

The video began with my mother, Margaret Parker, sitting beside the pool at the San Diego luxury resort. She was wearing Claire’s scarf, the one I had spent three weeks searching for in Munich. The one I had chosen because Claire always said winter colors made her feel elegant.

My mother smiled into the camera.

“New Year’s Eve with my family,” she said. “After everything I’ve sacrificed, I finally deserve a little happiness.”

People around her laughed.

Then Madison’s voice appeared behind the camera.

“Mom, tell everyone how you helped Ethan’s wife after the baby.”

My stomach tightened.

My mother leaned closer.

“Oh, Claire is fine. She’s young. She’s dramatic sometimes. Honestly, I think she enjoys making people worry.”

I felt Claire freeze beside me.

The room suddenly became too small.

My mother continued.

“She had everything she needed. Food, money, a beautiful home. But some women don’t appreciate what they have.”

I looked at Claire.

Her face had gone completely pale.

She wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t surprised.

She looked like someone hearing a wound being reopened.

The video ended.

I lowered the phone slowly.

“Is that what she told you?” I asked.

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because every time I tried, your mother reminded me that you were in Germany working for our future.”

I looked toward the bassinet.

Our daughter was sleeping peacefully, unaware that the people who were supposed to love her had abandoned her mother.

“Claire,” I whispered, “what exactly happened while I was gone?”

May you like

She swallowed hard.

And then she told me everything.
