CHAPTER 3 — THE FIRST CONFRONTATION
I didn’t call my mother that night.
I wanted to.
Every part of me wanted to hear her explain herself.
But anger makes people careless.
And I didn’t want careless.
I wanted truth.
The next morning, I did something my family never expected.
I started collecting evidence.
I checked every bank transfer.
Every receipt.
Every delivery confirmation.
The money was gone.
The groceries were delivered.
The baby supplies were delivered.
The recovery meals were delivered.
But none of them reached Claire.
I found messages between my mother and Madison.
My hands shook as I read them.
Madison:
“She doesn’t need all that expensive food. She’s acting like a princess.”
Margaret:
“Ethan trusts us. We know what’s best.”
I closed my eyes.
My own family had confused control with love.
Around noon, my mother called.
I answered.
“Ethan! Happy New Year!”
Her voice was cheerful.
Like nothing had happened.
“How was Germany? Did you get my message?”
“No.”
A pause.
“What?”
“I said no.”
Her tone changed.
“Are you okay?”
I looked at Claire sitting on the couch with Lily in her arms.
“She’s here.”
Silence.
“Who?”
“My wife.”
Another silence.
Then my mother laughed nervously.
“Oh honey, Claire probably told you some emotional story. You know how new mothers can be.”
I felt something inside me go cold.
“Mom.”
“Yes?”
“Why was my wife eating cold ramen eleven days after surgery?”
No answer.
“Why was my daughter sleeping in a freezing apartment?”
Still nothing.
“Why were you wearing Claire’s scarf at a luxury resort?”
Her breathing changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
For the first time in my life, my mother sounded afraid.
“Ethan, you’re misunderstanding.”
“No.”
I looked at Claire.
“I finally understand.”
I ended the call.
And then I made the decision that would change my entire family forever.
I booked a flight.
Not to Germany.
To San Diego.
