Chapter 9 – The Hidden Accounts

Two days later, Emily agreed to meet with a family law attorney recommended by the hospital.

Carol expected discussions about custody and divorce.

Instead, the attorney asked a surprising question.

"Do you know how much money you own?"

Emily blinked.

"I don't own anything."

The attorney smiled sadly.

"Let's verify that."

Within hours they uncovered dozens of financial records.

Emily's salary from her engineering job had continued depositing into a joint account after marriage.

But large transfers appeared every month.

Thousands of dollars.

Always moved into accounts controlled solely by Ryan.

Credit cards had been opened in Emily's name.

Loans.

Insurance policies.

Retirement withdrawals.

Emily stared silently at the paperwork.

"I never signed these."

The attorney nodded.

"Some signatures appear... questionable."

Carol looked at him.

"Are you saying forgery?"

"I'm saying a forensic handwriting expert should examine everything."

The deeper they searched, the worse it became.

Ryan hadn't simply controlled Emily.

He had been quietly stealing from her.

The attorney closed the folder.

"This case just became much bigger than divorce."

At that same moment, Ryan received a phone call from his bank.

Several accounts had been temporarily frozen pending investigation.

His confident smile disappeared.

For the first time, he understood something terrifying.

Emily had finally spoken.

And the truth left a paper trail.
