Chapter 11 – The Day Emily Went Home Alone

Five days after Grace was born, Emily was discharged from the hospital.

For the first time since her wedding, she made a decision without asking Ryan's permission.

She wasn't going back to his parents' house.

Instead, Carol drove her to the small home where Emily had grown up—a modest brick house filled with framed family photographs and memories that had never demanded perfection.

As soon as Emily stepped inside carrying Grace, she burst into tears.

"I forgot what peace feels like."

Carol hugged her carefully.

"Now your daughter will grow up knowing it."

That afternoon, Ryan appeared outside the house.

He didn't pound on the door.

He rang the bell politely, holding flowers and a stuffed teddy bear.

When Carol answered, he smiled.

"I just want to see my wife and my daughter."

"You've already been told not to come here."

"I've changed."

Carol looked at him steadily.

"You've had five days."

Ryan lowered his voice.

"Carol... families deserve second chances."

Before she could answer, Emily walked into the hallway holding Grace.

Ryan's eyes immediately softened.

"Emily, sweetheart..."

She didn't move closer.

Instead, she spoke calmly.

"I've hired a lawyer."

The smile vanished.

"You don't mean that."

"I do."

"You'll regret this."

Emily looked down at her sleeping daughter.

"No."

Then she met his eyes.

"The only thing I regret is believing I deserved the way you treated me."

Carol quietly closed the front door.

Ryan stood on the porch for several minutes before walking away.

Neither woman noticed the neighbor across the street recording the encounter on a security camera.

That footage would soon become far more important than anyone realized.
