Chapter 14 – Learning to Breathe Again

Months passed.
Autumn replaced summer.
Grace learned to smile.
Then to laugh.
The sound filled Carol's house like music.
Emily began therapy every Thursday afternoon.
At first she spoke very little.
Gradually, she rediscovered pieces of herself.
She started running again.
She accepted freelance engineering projects.
Eventually she returned to work, this time for a company that allowed flexible hours.
One afternoon she caught her reflection while carrying Grace through the park.
She stopped walking.
The exhausted, frightened woman she'd seen in the mirror for two years was gone.
In her place stood someone stronger.
Not because life had become easy.
Because she had survived it.
That evening Carol found Emily packing a small box.
"What's that?"
"My old journals."
"What are you going to do with them?"
Emily smiled softly.
"Keep one page."
"And the rest?"
She placed the box beside the fireplace.
"I'm done letting those years define me."
The flames rose slowly.
Each page curled into ash.
Grace giggled from her playpen.
Emily looked toward her daughter.
"I want her first memories to be filled with love."
Carol wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
"They will be."
Outside, colorful leaves drifted gently across the yard.
