Chapter 13 – Patricia Faces the Mirror

Patricia spent weeks insisting her son had been misunderstood.
She blamed Emily.
She blamed Carol.
She blamed modern marriages.
Then investigators arrived at her house with financial subpoenas.
Boxes of documents disappeared into evidence bags.
Her attorney delivered the news she feared most.
"If these signatures are fraudulent, your son could face criminal charges."
Patricia sat in stunned silence.
Later that evening, she opened the locked filing cabinet Ryan had always kept organized.
Inside she found copies of Emily's employment records, medical paperwork, and handwritten notes.
One page stopped her cold.
Ryan had written a monthly budget.
Beside Emily's salary was a single sentence.
Keep her dependent.
Patricia read it again.
Then again.
Her hands began to shake.
For years she had believed she was teaching Emily discipline.
Instead, she had been helping her son build a cage.
The following morning, Patricia requested a meeting with Emily.
Carol attended as well.
Patricia looked older than either of them remembered.
"I can't ask you to forgive me," she said quietly.
"I ignored things because admitting the truth would have meant admitting I failed as a mother."
Emily listened without speaking.
"I should have protected you," Patricia continued.
"I protected my son instead."
Emily finally answered.
"I hope one day you become the grandmother Grace deserves."
It wasn't forgiveness.
But it was the first honest conversation they had ever shared.
