Chapter 10 – Patricia's House Begins to Crumble

Patricia arrived at the hospital dressed elegantly, carrying flowers and homemade soup.
She expected forgiveness.
Instead, she found two security officers waiting outside Emily's room.
"I'm her mother-in-law."
"They know."
"I've come to see my grandchild."
The officer checked the visitor list.
"I'm sorry."
"You're not authorized."
Patricia's smile disappeared.
Inside the room, Emily watched through the glass without moving.
Carol stood beside her.
"Do you want to speak with her?"
Emily looked down at Grace sleeping peacefully.
"No."
Patricia eventually left.
But she didn't go home.
She drove directly to her attorney.
Unfortunately for her, bad news was already waiting.
Investigators had requested financial documents connected to Ryan's accounts.
The family business was also under review after irregular tax filings surfaced.
Patricia insisted it was all a misunderstanding.
Her attorney wasn't convinced.
Meanwhile, Ryan sat alone in the empty living room of the house that had once felt completely under his control.
The security cameras.
The locked filing cabinet.
The hidden documents.
They no longer protected him.
They had become evidence.
Late that evening, Carol stood beside the hospital window holding Grace.
Emily joined her quietly.
"I used to think leaving would destroy my life."
Carol smiled gently.
"And now?"
May you like
Emily kissed her daughter's forehead.
"I think staying would have."
