Chapter 8 – The Nurse's Quiet Question
The next morning, a maternity nurse named Angela entered Grace's room for a routine examination.
She smiled warmly before checking Emily's blood pressure.
Then she noticed the fading fingerprints around Emily's wrist.
Angela didn't react immediately.
Instead, she waited until Carol stepped into the hallway with the baby.
When they were alone, she spoke softly.
"Emily... are you safe at home?"
Emily froze.
"I..."
Angela pulled a small card from her pocket.
"You don't have to answer out loud."
Tears welled in Emily's eyes.
"No one has ever asked me that."
Angela nodded gently.
"Many women are afraid."
Emily stared at the ceiling.
"I thought maybe this was normal."
"No."
Angela reached for her hand.
"No one should be afraid of their husband."
Emily finally whispered the words she had buried for nearly two years.
"He controls everything."
Angela quietly documented every visible bruise before notifying the hospital social worker.
Within an hour, a domestic violence advocate arrived.
She explained Emily's legal rights.
Emergency housing.
Protective orders.
Financial assistance.
Counseling.
Emily listened in disbelief.
"I didn't know any of this existed."
Carol squeezed her hand.
"You don't have to fight alone anymore."
Meanwhile, downstairs in the hospital lobby, Ryan argued furiously with security.
"I have every right to see my wife."
The guard remained calm.
"Not unless she says so."
