Chapter 6 - THE FRIENDS AT THE LUNCHEON
Officer Ruiz interviewed every woman who attended the luncheon.
Some hired attorneys.
Others blamed Vanessa.
All insisted they misunderstood what was happening.
Celeste admitted she saw Vanessa lock Leo inside the kennel.
She claimed Vanessa promised to release him after dinner.
Melissa admitted hearing him ask for water.
She said she believed the staff would help.
A woman named Diane Shaw had signed a statement describing Leo as violent.
The statement was dated that morning.
It claimed he threw a glass at Vanessa during lunch.
Leo had been inside the kennel when Diane arrived.
The event described in her statement had never occurred.
Vanessa had prepared witness accounts in advance.
Diane called them templates.
Officer Ruiz called them evidence of conspiracy.
Another guest, Rebecca Sloan, produced a recording.
She had secretly recorded the patio conversation because Vanessa’s comments made her uncomfortable.
The audio began before my arrival.
Vanessa said:
“By tomorrow, the boy will be somewhere equipped to manage him.”
A guest asked:
“What will Mark say?”
Vanessa laughed.
“Whatever I tell him.”
Another woman asked whether the placement was permanent.
Graham’s wife answered:
“It needs to last long enough for the trust transition.”
Glasses clinked.
Someone asked about Bennett Neural Systems.
Vanessa replied:
“Mark built the company because he cannot separate love from guilt.”
“Once the child becomes officially dangerous, he will sign anything to protect the brand.”
My absences had not only created opportunity.
They had become part of the strategy.
Vanessa knew I feared public scandal.
She knew I felt guilty about Claire.
She knew I avoided conflict after travel.
She planned to show me edited footage of Leo behaving violently.
Then she would give me a sedative.
Place the transfer papers beside my drink.
And tell me I was saving my son from himself.
Rebecca’s recording captured one more sentence.
“If the boy has an accident before placement, the trust becomes simpler.”
No one laughed after that.
But no one called police either.
Officer Ruiz arrested Vanessa that evening.
She was charged with child abuse, unlawful imprisonment, evidence tampering, fraud, and conspiracy.
The women who signed false statements faced obstruction charges.
Graham Vale disappeared before officers reached Hawthorne Ridge.
The academy’s financial records showed twenty-seven children whose family trusts paid unusually high fees.
Several parents had been declared incapacitated by the same doctor.
Dr. Samuel Price.
The man who signed Leo’s placement petition.
