Chapter 15 - THE BOY WHO FINISHED HIS STATEMENT

Leo’s recorded interview played on the ninth day.

He wore a red sweatshirt.

His feet did not reach the floor.

Dr. Lewis sat nearby.

A child specialist asked simple questions first.

His name.

His age.

His favorite superhero.

Then she asked about Vanessa.

“Was she kind to you?”

Leo thought carefully.

“When Daddy watched.”

“What happened when your father left?”

“She changed.”

“How?”

“She said the house was hers.”

“She said Daddy picked her because I was too much work.”

He described the pantry.

The wine room.

The kennel.

“How long were you outside?”

“One night and one day.”

“Did you have food?”

“No.”

“Water?”

“A little cup.”

“Why were you placed there?”

“I spilled juice.”

“Did you spill it on purpose?”

“No.”

“What did Vanessa call the kennel?”

“A timeout.”

Leo looked toward the camera.

“It wasn’t a timeout.”

“What was it?”

“A cage.”

The courtroom became silent.

The specialist asked about the belt.

The phone calls.

The gifts Vanessa removed.

“Did you think your father knew?”

“Yes.”

“What did you think he wanted?”

“For me to go away.”

The specialist offered to stop.

Leo shook his head.

“I want to finish.”

“What changed when your father came home?”

“He opened the gate.”

“Did that make you feel safe?”

Leo paused.

“Not yet.”

The answer entered me like a blade.

The specialist continued.

“When did you begin feeling safer?”

“When he said Vanessa lied.”

“When he let Aunt Rachel keep the money papers.”

“When he stayed outside my room.”

“When he stopped saying forever.”

“What do you mean?”

“He said he would never leave again.”

“Then he said he might travel someday, but I would have my own phone and people to call.”

“The second one was real.”

The jury heard an eight-year-old explain the difference between comfort and trust.

The interview ended with one question.

“What do you want adults to understand?”

Leo looked directly into the camera.

“When a kid says a grown-up is scary, don’t ask the scary grown-up if it’s true.”

No one moved after the screen went dark.

Vanessa lowered her head.

For the first time, she looked less angry than exposed.
