Vanessa’s trial began eighteen months after the kennel.
Graham, Alan, Dr. Price, and several others faced separate proceedings.
Vanessa refused every meaningful plea agreement.
She believed she could explain what happened.
Her attorneys described her as an overwhelmed stepmother abandoned by a traveling husband.
They called Leo troubled.
They called the kennel a secure outdoor enclosure.
They called the locks safety devices.
The prosecutor displayed the silver padlock.
Then photographs of the concrete floor.
The empty cup.
The overnight temperature.
Forty-one degrees.
Elegant language collapsed beneath physical facts.
Celeste testified.
She admitted watching Vanessa lock Leo inside.
She admitted hearing him cry.
She admitted leaving.
The defense praised her for eventually cooperating.
Celeste corrected them.
“I was not brave when the child needed me.”
“I became honest after his father came home.”
Dr. Price testified next.
He admitted diagnosing Leo without an interview.
He admitted using edited footage.
He admitted receiving money from the Vale companies.
Alan testified about the false trips.
Deleted calls.
Drugged drinks.
Forged signatures.
He did not ask for forgiveness.
His fear and greed were entered into evidence without transformation.
Then Leo’s recordings played.
Vanessa tearing drawings.
Withholding food.
Locking doors.
Discussing trust shares.
The jury heard Graham ask what happened if Leo did not survive the kennel.
They heard Vanessa answer.
Then the trust becomes easier.
Several jurors looked away.
The prosecutor stopped the video.
“No.”
She faced them.
“Please watch.”
“This case exists because too many adults looked away.”
The recording continued.
Vanessa’s attorney called the sentence dark humor.
The prosecutor displayed the life-insurance documents.
The trust plans.
The institution contract.
The forged incapacity petition.
The joke had a legal structure.
