Chapter 16 - VANESSA’S DEFINITION OF LOVE

Vanessa took the stand against her attorneys’ advice.
She wore a navy suit.
Her voice remained calm.
She described meeting a grieving widower.
Entering a house frozen by death.
Trying to raise a difficult child.
She said I refused discipline.
She said Leo manipulated me with memories of Claire.
She said she became the only adult willing to create structure.
The prosecutor approached.
“Did you lock Leo inside the kennel?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“I intended several hours.”
“He remained overnight.”
“I lost track of time.”
“You hosted a luncheon beside the kennel.”
“I believed he was sleeping.”
“On concrete?”
“He had a jacket.”
The photograph showed no jacket.
She changed direction.
“He refused blankets.”
The video showed her removing one.
“Did you restrain his wrists?”
“For safety.”
“Whose?”
“Mine.”
“Did he attack you?”
“He became physical.”
The full recording showed Vanessa grabbing him first.
“Did you intercept his calls?”
“I protected Mark during critical business periods.”
“Did you create some of those periods?”
Vanessa looked toward Alan.
“He acted independently.”
The messages showed her instructions.
The prosecutor displayed Claire’s trust file.
“Did you know Leo owned company shares before you met Mark?”
Vanessa remained silent.
“Did Graham discuss those shares with you?”
“Yes.”
“Did he arrange your first meeting?”
“He told me Mark would attend the benefit.”
“Did you marry Mark as part of a plan?”
“No.”
A message appeared on the screen.
Widower isolated.
Child controls shares.
Approach through foundation event.
Vanessa’s calm expression cracked.
“I developed feelings.”
“Did those feelings stop you from drugging your husband?”
“No.”
“Did they stop you from imprisoning his son?”
Her voice rose.
“I gave that child everything.”
“A home.”
“School.”
“Opportunities.”
The prosecutor answered:
“The home belonged partly to his trust.”
“The school was paid by his trust.”
“The opportunities came with locks.”
Vanessa stared toward me.
“Leo was destroying Mark.”
“He kept him trapped in grief.”
“I was trying to give my husband a future.”
“By removing his son?”
“By making the child manageable.”
There it was.
Not motherhood.
Management.
The prosecutor asked one final question.
“If Mark returned Friday as scheduled, where would Leo be?”
Vanessa said nothing.
“At Hawthorne Ridge?”
Silence.
“Would Mark know what truly happened?”
Silence.
“Would Leo come home?”
May you like
Vanessa looked away.
The answer was no.
