Rachel brought me a sealed envelope Claire had left with her.
She had been instructed to give it to me if anyone attempted to control Leo’s trust.
Rachel had waited because she did not know about the placement plan.
Vanessa had kept us apart.
The envelope carried Claire’s handwriting.

You will want to protect Leo from every hard thing after I am gone.
You cannot.

Do not try to replace safety with money.
I stopped reading.
That was exactly what I had done.

I built financial walls and called them protection.

I accepted the suspension.

“No.”
“I need to become his father again before I manage his fortune.”

A Vale company paid a private nurse during Claire’s final week.
The nurse altered the medication log.
She disappeared after Claire’s death.
Federal investigators found her in Arizona.
She admitted Graham paid her to increase the sedative.
He told her Claire was suffering and the family wanted mercy.
Claire had not consented.
