Chapter 3 - The Deleted Minute

Raymond left Emily only after she made him promise to return.

The fetal monitor continued its relentless rhythm.

Emily stared at the ceiling while medication flowed through the IV.

Across the hospital, Raymond entered the security operations room.

Preston and Vanessa had been separated.

Neither knew that the camera archive automatically created three copies.

The first sat on the hospital server.

The second went to Saint Claire Holdings.

The third uploaded to an off-site legal archive installed after a malpractice scandal six years earlier.

Someone had deleted the local copy.

The security chief pulled up the audit log.

“Executive credential PW-04.”

Raymond knew the credential.

Preston.

“Recover it.”

“We don’t need to.”

The chief opened another window.

The off-site copy appeared.

There was Emily beside the rail.

Vanessa moved toward her.

Her heel rose.

Then struck.

Preston watched.

Afterward, he leaned toward Emily instead of helping her.

The recording had sound.

Every word was clear.

Raymond listened to Preston say, “Don’t make a scene.”

His hands curled into fists.

Then something else happened in the video.

Vanessa turned toward the security camera.

She looked directly at it.

And smiled.

Raymond leaned closer.

“She knew it was there.”

The security chief nodded.

“That appears likely.”

Raymond watched another thirty seconds.

Preston whispered something into Vanessa’s ear.

She answered.

The microphone barely captured it.

The technician increased the audio.

Vanessa’s voice became clear.

“If she loses the baby, the trust changes.”

Nobody in the room moved.

Raymond stared at the screen.

“Play that again.”

The technician did.

If she loses the baby, the trust changes.

Raymond’s stomach tightened.

Emily’s baby was beneficiary to a Saint Claire family trust created by Catherine before her death.

But the exact provisions were confidential.

Only the trustee, Emily, Raymond, and their attorneys were supposed to know them.

Preston should not have known anything beyond the trust’s existence.

Raymond pulled out his phone.

“Get Martin Bell on the line.”

Martin was the family trust attorney.

He answered immediately.

Raymond asked one question.

“If Emily’s child does not survive, what happens to Catherine’s trust?”

Martin was silent.

Then he said, “Why are you asking?”

“Answer me.”

“The contingent interest remains with Emily.”

“And if Emily dies?”

Another pause.

“Her surviving spouse receives temporary voting authority until probate resolves.”

Raymond looked back at the frozen image of Preston.

“How temporary?”

“Potentially eighteen months.”

That was long enough.

Long enough to vote.

Long enough to sell.

Long enough to strip assets.

Raymond ended the call.

The security chief spoke quietly.

“You think the assault was intentional?”

Raymond did not answer.

He looked at the video again.

Vanessa’s heel.

Preston’s stillness.

The whispered sentence about the trust.

Then his phone rang.

Dr. Foster.

Raymond answered.

Her first words turned the room cold.

“We are losing the fetal heart rate.”
