Chapter 13 - Section Nine

Martin placed the red binder on the table.

Charles did not sit back down.

Raymond opened it.

“Twenty-six years ago, Catherine Saint Claire anticipated that management partners might attempt to gain control through marriage, coercion, incapacity, or harm to her descendants.”

Charles’s attorney whispered urgently.

Charles ignored him.

Raymond continued.

“Section Nine permits Saint Claire Holdings to terminate and reclaim management shares if coercive conduct is established.”

A board member adjusted his glasses.

“Has it been established?”

Martin connected a laptop.

The hallway video played.

Vanessa’s heel struck Emily.

Preston stood beside her.

Then came the audio.

“If she loses the baby, the trust changes.”

Several directors visibly recoiled.

Charles closed his eyes.

Next came the altered medical record.

Then the false psychiatric evaluation.

Then payment records.

Then surveillance photographs.

Twenty-two years of power began collapsing in less than twenty minutes.

Raymond called for the vote.

Charles finally spoke.

“You cannot do this.”

Emily answered through the screen.

“You were willing to risk my son’s life.”

“I never ordered Vanessa to kick you.”

“You ordered everything around it.”

“That is not the same.”

Emily stared at him.

“To Samuel, it is.”

The vote began.

One by one, directors approved activation of Section Nine.

Fourteen.

Fifteen.

Sixteen.

Charles’s family needed only seven votes to block it.

They received three.

The chairman announced the result.

Section Nine was activated.

Whitmore Management’s leased voting shares immediately reverted to Saint Claire Holdings.

Contracts entered review.

Executive privileges were suspended.

Charles Whitmore was removed from the board.

Preston lost every hospital title attached to his family name.

Charles stared at the table.

His empire had not disappeared completely.

But the structure holding it up had cracked.

Emily thought she would feel satisfaction.

Instead, she felt tired.

Then Martin moved to the second item.

“The Northstar merger.”

Charles looked up sharply.

Emily voted yes.

The merger passed.

Charles stood so quickly his chair struck the wall.

“You have no idea what you just triggered.”

Raymond’s expression hardened.

“We know exactly what we triggered.”

“No.”

Charles looked toward Emily on the screen.

“You think this was about my family keeping contracts?”

His laugh was empty.

“You have not found the real accounts.”

Emily leaned closer.

“What accounts?”

Charles’s attorney grabbed his arm.

“Do not say another word.”

Charles pulled away.

He looked at Raymond.

“Ask Catherine why she created the Saint Claire Children’s Foundation.”

Raymond went still.

“My sister has been dead nine years.”

Charles smiled bitterly.

“Exactly.”

Then Detective Ortiz entered the boardroom with two federal agents.

Charles’s smile disappeared.

One agent held up an arrest warrant.

But before they reached him, Charles whispered one last thing.

“Find account 417 before your precious hospital does.”
