Chapter 15 - Vanessa’s Real Role

Vanessa was arrested at a private airfield outside the city.
She had a passport.
Thirty thousand dollars in cash.
And a one-way reservation to Belize.
During interrogation, she refused to speak for three hours.
Then detectives told her Preston had cooperated.
She laughed.
“Of course he did.”
They showed her the account records.
Her expression changed.
Finally, she asked for an attorney.
Then for a deal.
Emily did not attend the interrogation.
She watched portions later.
Vanessa’s story was uglier than anyone expected.
Her father, Dr. Malcolm Reed, had worked with Charles Whitmore for thirteen years.
He created medical evaluations whenever Charles needed leverage over employees, executives, or disputed beneficiaries.
Vanessa began helping six years earlier.
She attended galas.
Made introductions.
Collected information.
Seduced people when useful.
Preston was only one target.
But Vanessa claimed something that stunned investigators.
“I didn’t choose Emily.”
“Who did?” Detective Ortiz asked.
“Charles.”
“Why?”
“Because Preston was losing control of her.”
“What does that mean?”
Vanessa leaned back.
“Emily had started asking about the management contracts.”
Emily remembered.
Four months earlier, she had noticed strange expenses in a charitable report.
She asked Preston one question over breakfast.
Why did Whitmore Consulting receive nine million dollars for “community outreach”?
Preston had laughed it off.
Two weeks later, Vanessa appeared at a gala.
Emily closed her eyes.
Nothing had been accidental.
Ortiz continued.
“Did you intend to cause premature labor?”
Vanessa looked down.
“No.”
“You kicked a thirty-two-week pregnant woman.”
“I was told to frighten her.”
“That is not an answer.”
Vanessa’s voice tightened.
“Preston told me to confront her.”
Emily stared at the screen.
Preston had claimed he never agreed to violence.
Vanessa continued.
“He said Emily needed an incident before Monday.”
Ortiz leaned forward.
“Did he tell you to kick her?”
A long silence followed.
Finally Vanessa whispered.
“He said, ‘Do whatever makes her lose control.’”
Emily stopped the recording.
Her hands were shaking.
Raymond stood beside her.
“He lied again.”
Emily looked toward the NICU.
Samuel’s chest rose beneath the soft light.
Preston had cried during his statement.
He had confessed pieces.
He had looked ashamed.
And still he had protected himself.
Emily reached for her phone.
“What are you doing?”
“Calling my lawyer.”
Raymond nodded.
“For the divorce?”
Emily shook her head.
“For more than that.”
She looked at Samuel.
“I want every asset Preston moved during our marriage traced.”
May you like
Her voice became steady again.
“If he built our marriage as a trap, I want to know exactly what he stole while I was inside it.”
