Chapter 14 - Account 417

Charles was arrested on charges related to fraud, conspiracy, unlawful access to medical records, and attempted financial coercion.

Additional charges remained under review.

But Emily could not forget the number.

417.

Raymond searched Catherine’s hidden room again.

Nothing.

Martin searched old trust records.

Nothing.

Then Emily remembered something.

Her mother had taken her to Room 417 during the hospital’s original pediatric renovation.

Emily had been sixteen.

The room had been empty.

Catherine stood by the window and said, “Some rooms save lives without ever holding a patient.”

At the time, Emily assumed her mother was being sentimental.

Now she called Raymond.

“Check old architectural plans.”

Room 417 no longer existed.

A renovation twelve years earlier had turned that section into administrative storage.

Raymond and security opened the sealed records room.

Behind a cabinet was a small wall safe.

The combination was Catherine’s birthday.

Inside sat a single ledger.

No cash.

No jewelry.

No contracts.

Just names.

Hundreds of names.

Children.

Dates.

Hospital identification numbers.

And payments.

Some were enormous.

Emily studied the scanned pages from her bed.

“What is this?”

Martin turned pale.

“I think these are confidential treatment grants.”

Catherine had quietly funded surgeries for children whose families could not afford them.

Millions had moved through anonymous accounts.

But after Catherine’s death, the payments continued.

Then increased.

Raymond frowned.

“I did not authorize these.”

Martin pointed to the account signatures.

Neither had Emily.

The authorized officer was Charles Whitmore.

Emily stared.

“Why would Charles warn us about charity?”

Martin turned several pages.

Then stopped.

The grant amounts did not match hospital billing records.

A child’s surgery cost sixty thousand dollars.

The ledger showed two hundred thousand transferred.

Another cost thirty-five thousand.

The account paid one hundred and forty thousand.

The difference went somewhere else.

Raymond’s face hardened.

“They used sick children to inflate invoices.”

Federal investigators were called.

Within hours, they traced millions through shell charities.

Whitmore companies appeared repeatedly.

But another name appeared too.

Vanessa Cross.

Emily looked at the report.

“She was receiving money years before she met Preston.”

Detective Ortiz nodded.

“Six years.”

“So she wasn’t recruited recently.”

“No.”

Emily whispered.

“She was part of this long before the affair.”

Then Ortiz showed her a second document.

Vanessa Cross was not her birth name.

She had been born Vanessa Reed.

Emily stared at the surname.

Reed.

As in Dr. Malcolm Reed.

“The doctor?”

May you like

Ortiz nodded.

“His daughter.”
