Chapter 16 - The Missing Forty-Two Million

The forensic accountant found the first hidden transfer within six hours.

Then another.

Then thirty-seven more.

Money had been moving out of accounts connected to Emily’s marital estate for years.

Small enough to avoid immediate attention.

Large enough to become staggering over time.

Forty-two million dollars.

Emily stared at the number.

“I would have noticed.”

Martin shook his head.

“Not if the withdrawals were disguised as trust tax obligations.”

Preston knew Emily rarely touched the Saint Claire accounts.

She lived mostly on her teaching income before marriage.

Even after marrying into enormous wealth, she never developed expensive habits.

Preston had called that quality charming.

Apparently it had also made theft easier.

The money moved through Whitmore companies.

Then into debt payments.

Then into Account 417 charities.

Then outward again.

Emily whispered.

“He used my inheritance to keep his family alive.”

Raymond nodded.

“Partly.”

“What does that mean?”

The accountant turned the laptop.

A transfer of eight million dollars had gone to a company called Brighton Medical Ventures.

Emily did not recognize it.

Raymond did.

“Brighton owns the land beneath Northstar’s new surgical campus.”

Emily stared at him.

“Why would Preston send them money?”

Raymond’s expression darkened.

“Because someone has been buying Northstar property through intermediaries.”

The merger suddenly looked different.

If Whitmore-linked companies secretly controlled land Northstar needed, they could profit even after losing hospital management rights.

Emily leaned back.

“So even if they lost the vote, they had another way to make money.”

“Hundreds of millions.”

“Who owns Brighton?”

The accountant hesitated.

“We found a nominee owner.”

“Who?”

He turned another page.

Emily’s name appeared.

She went completely still.

“I have never seen that company.”

“We believe your signature was forged.”

Raymond swore under his breath.

Martin looked alarmed.

“If Brighton becomes part of the federal fraud investigation, Emily could appear financially involved.”

Emily understood immediately.

It was insurance.

If the Whitmores fell, they intended to drag her with them.

Raymond said.

“We can prove the forgery.”

“Can we?”

“Yes.”

Emily looked toward Samuel.

She had survived the assault.

Her son had survived birth.

The board vote had passed.

Yet somehow she felt closer to losing everything than before.

Then the accountant spoke again.

“There is something else.”

Emily looked up.

“Brighton transferred twelve million dollars last month.”

“To where?”

“A numbered account in Switzerland.”

“Owner?”

“We do not know yet.”

Raymond’s phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

One photograph.
