Chapter 1 - The Man Behind the Name

The four security officers did not look at Preston.

They looked at Emily.

Then they formed a quiet wall between her and Vanessa.

Preston’s expression changed from annoyance to disbelief.

“What the hell is this?”

The double doors opened again.

Raymond Saint Claire walked through them without hurrying.

He was sixty-one, silver-haired, broad-shouldered, and dressed in the charcoal suit he wore whenever he had spent the day with attorneys instead of doctors.

No entourage followed him.

He did not need one.

The hospital administrator came behind him.

So did the chief of security.

And the director of maternal medicine.

Vanessa’s confidence vanished first.

Preston’s took three seconds longer.

Raymond stopped beside Emily.

His eyes dropped to the hand beneath her stomach.

Then to the red mark showing near the edge of her dress.

“Who touched you?”

Emily looked at Vanessa.

“She kicked me.”

The hallway became completely silent.

Vanessa immediately lifted both hands.

“That is not what happened.”

Raymond turned toward the nurse behind the desk.

“You witnessed it?”

The nurse swallowed.

“Yes, sir.”

Preston stepped forward.

“Raymond, this is a family misunderstanding.”

Raymond looked at him.

“Do not call me Raymond.”

Preston froze.

For eight years, Preston had attended Saint Claire Foundation dinners.

He had shaken Raymond’s hand.

He had sat at tables paid for by Raymond.

Yet somehow Preston had convinced himself that marrying Raymond’s niece made them equals.

Raymond pointed toward the security camera.

“Preserve every second beginning thirty minutes before Emily arrived.”

The security chief nodded.

“Already locked.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“This is insane.”

“No,” Raymond said.

“What you did was insane.”

Preston laughed nervously.

“You cannot detain us because Emily is upset.”

Raymond finally looked directly at him.

“I am not detaining you.”

He glanced at security.

“They are.”

Vanessa took a step backward.

One officer moved with her.

Her voice rose.

“Preston.”

Preston ignored her.

He stared at Raymond.

“You’re going to embarrass the Whitmore family inside our own hospital?”

Raymond’s expression did not move.

“This has never been your hospital.”

Preston blinked.

Raymond continued.

“Your grandfather’s company owns eleven percent of the management corporation.”

He pointed toward the floor beneath them.

“Saint Claire Holdings owns the land.”

Then toward the ceiling.

“The building.”

Then toward the maternity wing.

“The medical equipment.”

Finally, he looked at Emily.

“And the controlling voting shares belong to a trust established for Catherine Saint Claire’s only daughter.”

Preston slowly turned toward his wife.

Emily met his eyes.

Catherine Saint Claire had been Emily’s mother.

Raymond spoke the words Preston had never bothered to discover.

“Emily owns more of this hospital than your entire family combined.”

Preston’s face went white.

But Emily felt another sharp tightening inside her abdomen.

This one did not fade.

She gripped Raymond’s arm.

His attention snapped toward her.

“Emily?”

She tried to answer.

Instead, warm liquid suddenly ran down the inside of her leg.

The maternal medicine director dropped the folder in her hand.

“Get her into triage now.”

Preston stared at the floor.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Emily looked down.

There was blood mixed with the fluid.

May you like

And suddenly the hospital ownership no longer mattered.

Her baby might be coming eight weeks too early.
