Chapter 2 - The Red Light

The officer turned his stern gaze toward Preston.

Preston immediately held up his hands in mock surrender.

"She's lying."

"The kid stole my phone."

"I went to grab it back, and she tripped into the menu stand."

My father stepped in smoothly.

"He's telling the truth, officer."

"My daughter is prone to hysterics."

The officer pulled out his notepad.

He looked around the room at the two hundred guests.

"Can anyone corroborate that story?"

No one spoke.

The guests simply stared at their shoes.

Thirty years of my family's wealth and influence kept every single mouth shut tight.

Preston smirked again.

He thought he had won.

He thought his golden armor was impenetrable.

That was when I pointed toward the entrance.

"You don't need their statements."

"Look up."

Everyone in the room followed my finger.

Mounted high above the double doors was a sleek, black dome.

A tiny red light was blinking steadily.

"The hotel's security camera captures the entire head table."

The blood completely drained from Preston's face.

My mother gasped.

The officer keyed his radio.

"Dispatch, I need hotel management to pull CCTV footage for the main ballroom immediately."
