Chapter 15 - The Unbreakable Lamb

A year passed since the trial.

The Vance real estate empire eventually went bankrupt.

The scandal had been too much, and the toxic culture was fully exposed.

My parents moved out of state, living in a small condo, completely disgraced.

They never reached out to apologize.

And I never called them.

I didn't need to.

Sophie and I had moved on.

We bought a beautiful little house in the suburbs with the money from a massive civil suit against the hotel for lack of security protocol, and my family for damages.

Sophie was thriving in fourth grade.

She was taking piano lessons and playing soccer.

The scar on her temple was barely visible now.

It was just a tiny white line.

A reminder that we survived.

One Sunday afternoon, we were planting flowers in our new garden.

Sophie looked up at me with bright, happy eyes.

"Mommy, these are going to look so beautiful."

I brushed the dirt off her cheek.

"Yes, they are, my sweet girl."

I looked at the peaceful life we had built.
