Chapter 13 - The Final Tape

I was the final witness.

I walked to the stand with quiet dignity.

I didn't cry.

I didn't yell.

I just told the truth.

I described the coldness of my family.

I described the moment I saw the blood on the menu board.

"My daughter didn't steal anything."

"She only wanted to celebrate her uncle's special day."

"And he used her as a prop for his own ego."

The defense attorney stood up to cross-examine me.

He tried to be gentle, knowing the jury already hated his client.

"Evelyn, isn't it true you've always harbored resentment toward your brother?"

"No."

"I didn't resent him."

"I pitied him."

The attorney looked confused.

"Pitied him?"

"Why?"

"Because he was raised to believe he was a god."

"And now he has to learn that he's just a man."

"A man who beats children."

The attorney had no further questions.

The trial wrapped up faster than anyone expected.

The jury went into deliberations.

We didn't have to wait long.
